Middle School

SHARRON FRAME

Acting Head of Middle School

This week the students of the Middle School elect the Middle School Captains for 2020. This is a prestigious role that requires students to lead by example, listen to the needs of others, and not be afraid to act in support of those that require help. It is not an easy role within the School. While we expect all our students to be role models for others, to publicly accept the badge of a leader is courageous, and shows commitment to accepting challenges and reaching for new heights.

Year 7 Community Service Expo

Students in Year 7 have been working on projects that provide service to others in the community. There were a range of ideas, from assistance in the ELC to collecting books for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Working in groups, each student contributed to the project, and then presented their work at an expo for parents and staff on Friday the 1st of November. Well done to all involved, the work was outstanding.

Year 7 MYP Interdisciplinary Unit – Water

On Monday the 11th of November, students from Year 7 held an expo to showcase their ideas based on their work in the MYP interdisciplinary unit - Water. This was the culmination of all their research and problem-solving work on this topic, in both Science and Individuals and Societies.

Students were asked to consider major water issues in Australia, select one problem to research, and then determine how it could be solved. Their ideas could be based on current thinking, or they could generate their own solution. The presentations were peer assessed as well as assessed by the staff involved. Some of the examples produced were excellent and well outside the normal presentation. To view the full gallery of the expo, click here.

Year 6 Market Day

Students in Year 6, as part of their Economics unit in Individuals and Society, will hold a Market Day from 3.30 pm on Thursday the 14th of November. All proceeds will be donated to selected charities.

Year 9 Examinations

Students will commence examinations on Monday the 18th of November, and conclude on Wednesday the 20th of November. Revision information has been forwarded home already, along with the timetable for the examinations. Students will be dismissed at the end of their final examination, with parental permission. If we have not received parental permission, it will be assumed the student is required to remain at school until the end of the day. Supervised study will be available for those students. Please note, we cannot accept verbal permission. Permission must be received in writing.

Dante's Got Your Covered

My name is Dante Keddie, I’m in year 7 and I started at Oakleigh Grammar this year.

I have created a charity called “Dante’s Got You Covered”, to help raise money and awareness for the homeless.

The idea for my charity began when my family and I were on vacation, and I saw a sea of tents underneath a bridge one morning. I asked my parents why everyone was camping. I was devastated when they explained how the tents were full of homeless men and women, just trying to survive.

I learnt the harsh truth about the homeless. I knew from that moment I had to do my part to help make a change - no matter how big or small.

I have been raising money under “Dante’s Got You Covered” for Backpack Beds for the Homeless since June 2018. I have had a lot of support from family and friends and local communities, where I raise donations at my local supermarket with my collection tin. To date, I have been able to raise over $4,000 which equates to 40 backpack beds to help people in need on our cold streets at night.

For the Year 7 Pastoral Charity Assignment, my friends suggested we arrange a fundraiser to wash the teachers and staff cars. With their kind donations, we managed to raise another $110.
