Ninna marni (Hi, How are you?),

This week we're celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our school so here's a snapshot of Aboriginal history from 50 years ago.

In 1909, the Aborigines Protection Act was introduced giving the Aborigines Protection Board the power to remove Aboriginal children from their families. Children were sent to school and educated in christianity, and were taught to reject their Aboriginality. They were expected to become servants or labourers. This is now known as the Stolen Generation.

It was only 50 years ago, in 1969, that the Aborigines Protection Act was abolished and all Aboriginal children were moved into the same welfare system as non-Aboriginal children. It made Aboriginal children who had been under the care of the Aborigines Welfare Board wards of the State.

We are lucky that today there are Indigenous perspectives being taught as part of the school curriculum and that Reconciliation Action Plans are being implemented in schools, and other organisations, to continue the process of healing and reconciliation.

Nukkun (see ya)!
