こんにちは,

Konnichiwa

Did you know that students from West Beach PS have just attended the annual Year 6/7 Western Suburbs Hiragana Competition?

Altogether, 19 teams from Flinders Park, North Haven, Grange, West Beach, St John Bosco, Blackfriars Priory School and Kidman Park Primary Schools competed.

It was a new style of competition, with 2 arenas running concurrently! Such an amazingly tough contest, with many rounds of reading both individual symbols as well as Japanese words. Students were very impressive – the speed of their reading in a second language was quite extraordinary!

The top 2 teams from each competition went through to the Grand Final. Well done to all our teams who came in the top 4 places of each competition. It was a tough contest! Congratulations to Annalise, Kiana and Bella B's team, The Spicy Ninja, who went through to the Grand Final and came in 3rd place!

To top it all off, we got to play some Japanese bingo, Jan Ken Pon (Rock, Paper, Scissors) and Atama/Oshiri (Heads and Tails) for all kinds of prizes. It was lovely to see our students compete fairly, show sportsmanship and experience the thrill of the contest. Lots of students received prizes for showing respect and fairness throughout the morning and it was fantastic to see such enthusiasm amongst all the students. We look forward to competing again next year.

Well done to Annalise H, Kiana G, Bella B, Allan X, Cooper B, Jiwon L, Tom H, Hayley W, Alicia T and Chelsea L who competed on the day. Unfortunately Jade M and Elliana B trained hard in the lead up but were unwell on the day. You all worked hard to be so confident and KNOW the hiragana. You put in a fantastic effort and should be proud of your results!

Sports Day

Sports Day is fast approaching, Friday 20th  September. Please find attached the Sports Day Program.

Sport News

Last week students in years 4 and 5 travelled to Henley Beach Primary School to compete in the Year 4/5 Rugby Tackle Carnival. We were lucky enough to have enough talent and enthusiasm that allowed us to field two teams from West Beach Primary. Both teams competed with grit and determination which saw both teams win lots of games.

Congratulations to Connor Kube and Lara Scutchings who took home the Sportsmanship award for West Beach. Well deserved.

These types of events are never possible without parent support. Thank you to all parents who came with us and those that came to support their children. Thank you to Ms Moten and Jake who took time out of their teaching time to support the students. I greatly appreciate your support.

Lunchtime Activities in the Library

On Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes we offer activities for students in the library. This includes craft, games, Lego and (this term) knitting.

These activities provide a fun environment for children to connect, cooperate and communicate whilst expressing their creativity, making new friends and learning new skills.

We are grateful to Raelene, Judy and Kate who volunteer their time to help with this. You may have noticed the “yarn-bombing” on one of our trees. Stay tuned for more colourful creations once the knitting classes conclude at the end of the term.

Accelerated Literacy in Room 1.

Many of our classes at West Beach Primary School use a teaching pedagogy called Accelerated Literacy as a part of their program. We meet with a literacy coach at least once a term to select a high quality text and plan how it can be used to explicitly teach reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing skills.

Over the course of the year we use a range of different text types depending on the children's year level and experience.

This year so far we have looked at a recount, a narrative and this term we have been learning about a descriptive report.

Our descriptive report is called The Moon. As a group we have read, analysed and explored it in many different ways.

In these photos the children had to read and un-jumble two fairly complex sentences from the text so that they used all of the words and both sentences made sense.

All children were highly successful and very proud of their finished work.

Well done Room 1.
