CAREERS PROGRAM
The Careers Program at Lilydale High School aims to assist students to make informed decisions about career choices and choices for study. This program assumes that our aim is met by students evaluating their personal strengths, weaknesses, interests, skills and then being aware of the range of options available to them.
Resources are available to enhance the curriculum offerings in any or all areas of study with emphasis on career investigation, work education and study options. These resources include DVD, folders, pamphlets and handbooks.
CAREER CHOICES
Making the best career choices involves:
- knowing yourself - what you like (your interests), what you are good at (your skills and abilities), what is important to you (values)
- getting to understand the world of work - what’s out there
- learning how to make informed decisions
- finding out how to achieve objectives
WORK EXPERIENCE
'Work Experience' is usually undertaken during the school holidays or towards the end of the school year after exams have finished. Students research their own work experience contacts to show they are committed to the task and want to perform this activity.
Work experience is a short term placement with a host employer that will give a student an insight into the industry and the work. Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to take part in activities which require extensive training or experience.
MANAGED INDIVIDUAL PATHWAYS (MIPs)
Parents/Guardians are welcome to contact the Careers Office to arrange an interview if your child is experiencing difficulties and needs assistance in succeeding at school, completing their schooling to the highest level possible (Year 10 as a minimum) and in gathering information about potential careers.
The purpose of MIPs interviews is to review the student’s pathways plan and discuss their future pathways. The program also includes follow-up of early school leavers (those who don’t complete Year 12) at the time of leaving and six months later.
MIPs aim to help you to:
- make a smooth transition from compulsory schooling to further education, training and employment
- develop skills to effectively manage your career throughout your life
- develop your knowledge and understanding of education, training and employment options
Lilydale High School is committed to ensuring every student has a successful and positive transition from school to the world beyond. To achieve this we ensure students in Years 9 to 12 have a Managed Individual Pathway (MIPs) Plan. These plans detail each students educational and employment goals and contain a two year Individual Pathway Plan.
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET)
Students can choose from Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs as part of their VCE.
The benefits for students completing a VET program include;
- completion of two qualifications at the end of the VCE (VCE and a TAFE Certificate)
- students will accelerate through post secondary school programs
- students will gain industry experience as part of ‘on the job’ training
- offer courses that are motivating and engaging
- expand opportunities and pathways for students
- prepare students for the workplace
