CONGRATULATION CHLOE - DUX OF COLLEGE

AND TO OUR ALL OF OUR 2019 VCE STUDENTS

The VCE results for 2019 are in and there were some exciting individual achievements and overall results to celebrate.

Firstly, St Andrews DUX of 2019 is Chloe Chandaraj (opposite).

Chloe achieved a superb ATAR score of 99.3

Congratulations Chloe!

In addition, two other students received perfect study scores of 50:

Holly Bligh — Legal Studies

Lachlan Ahearn — VCE/VET Engineering Studies

Congratulations Holly and Lachlan!

And finally, congratulations also goes to all of our VCE cohort who have had a tremendously successful year and achieved outstanding ATAR scores. Well done everyone - you have made St Andrews proud.

CAN SENIORS SOLVE THE MURDER MYSTERY?

The Senior Library hosted a crowd of budding detectives, all waiting for their assignment to solve a crime and follow in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot.

The detectives had to survey the crime scene, collect and analyse clues, interview suspects and determine the culprit.

And finally all was revealed!

It was fantastic time of fun and intrigue for everyone involved and a perfect opportunity for all to de-stress after a long and arduious year.

ST ANDREWS CAREERS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

MONASH UNIVERSITY STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Visiting a university campus is an important step in deciding where students would continue their education after high school and also an opportunity to get a feel for the university culture.

St Andrews Senior School students visited Monash University twice this year; in Term 2 - Monash Clayton Campus guided tour and faculty presentations for Year 11 and 12 students and in Term 4 - Monash Peninsula Student Experience Day for Year 10 and 11 students.

The Monash University Peninsula Campus Student Experience Day was included in our Senior School Headstart Program and offered a range of insightful and interactive activities:

  • a session from a leading educational psychologist on managing stress, building resilience and staying motivated in the VCE
  • faculty workshops: Education – ‘The future of digital learning’, Business – ‘What will our future leaders 'look' like?’ and Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences – ‘The ‘Mask Ed’ program where students checked vital signs, performed CPR and gave simulated injections and a tour of Monash paramedic facilities
  • a presentation about Monash University courses, scholarships, entry schemes and student life
  • Monash Peninsula Campus guided tour.

On Thursday 28th November, our Year 10s and 11 students went on a day long excursion to Monash University in Frankston. This was a great opportunity to see what is offered at University. When we arrived we went to the gym and completed some challenging puzzles. Next we heard an interesting and engaging talk from a psychologist about stress in young people. After this we split up into three elective groups: medicine, business and teaching, to explore what these areas could become in the future. Finally we had a person from the University to answer all of our burning career questions. "The day was an exciting experience of university!" - Callum Andrew Year 10 student.

As the end of the school year is approaching, I take time to review and reflect on the many activities and programs we have offered to our students in 2019 and plan for a new year.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

Traditionally it is a very exciting time in Year 10 study, during which students meet new people, explore possible careers options and develop work readiness skills. A placement with an employer is designed to provide an insight into an industry and the world of work. Plus, this is a great way for students to build their resume and start a list of future referees. St Andrews work experience takes place during the last week of Term 2. The dates for 2020 are Saturday 20th - Friday 26th June.

ENGAGE & EMPOWER YEAR 10 CAREERS PROGRAM

The goal of the program is to encourage students to be passionate about their future. In partnership with Commonwealth Bank’s award-winning ‘Start Smart’ financial literacy educational program. Students are offered an insight on how to be smart in earning, saving, spending, investing and enterprise. 'Resume writing' and 'Interview skills' workshops are led by Box Hill Institute Skills & Jobs Centre, and ATO presenters teach our students about tax and super. A morning VicRoads theory session ‘Road Smart’ and an afternoon practical component at METEC help prepare our beginner drivers for a lifetime of safe driving. Students also complete an online career diagnostic quiz and create their career action plan. In 2020 the Engage and Empower Year 10 Careers Program will run from Wednesday 18th - Friday 20th March.

BARISTA COURSE

In 2020 we are partnering with William Angliss Institute to offer our Year 10 students an opportunity to learn valuable skills in hospitality and coffee making held on Wednesday 10th June.

It is an honour and privilege to be a part of our students’ career exploration journey and support them as they anticipate their tomorrows and move towards the future of work or further study. All of the activities we offer enable students to learn more about themselves and their interests, aptitudes, values and strengths and get inspired about their future study.

THE WELLBEING TEAM EMBRACE CHRISTMAS

The Student Wellbeing Team have embraced the Christmas spirit indeed. The Senior School looks rather festive adorned with tinsel of various colours, and a number of students went into a pre-Christmas baking frenzy, making enough chocolate truffles to provide morning tea for many students and staff around the school.

THE 2019 COLLEGE YEAR BOOK A SUCCESS

It seems students could not get their hands on the new 2019 College Year Book quick enough, to see what their friends had to say and what other year levels did throughout the year. By all accounts, students love the new look 2019 issue and are already thinking about their contributions for next year's 2020 issue.

MORNING TEA REGENCY STYLE

Next year our Year 12 students will be studying Jane Austin’s much loved novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’ about love, social class and etiquette during the English Regency period as part of their course.

To mark the event, the coming Year 12 students celebrated with a morning tea-Austin style. Needless to say, amidst the fun and delicious food, consummate social graces were enacted by all.

Unfortunately, Mr Darcy was unable to attend.
