INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Vocal Ensemble Performance

On Thursday 31 May, the Lilydale High School Vocal Ensemble performed with the Mullum Mullum Gathering Place Indigenous Choir and Casey Grammar School Choir at the VICTORIAN INDIGENOUS REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE, at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance.

It all started with a rehearsal with the Mullum Mullum choir visiting our school early in May and doing a rehearsal, via a Skype call, with Casey Grammar School Choir.

On the day, students wore the school blazers, which made them look very professional for the event.

We all travelled into the city by train and when we arrived, we met the conductor of the Royal Australian Air Force Band. This year the band was going to accompany the choirs in the performance. What a great honour and wonderful experience for the students.

The service started and the students sat patiently while listening to the speakers. The performance of “I Am Australian” started off with the didgeridoo and gradually built up with more voices and instruments. It was a grand performance. We also performed the sombre song which is often used for indigenous funerals – “The Old Rugged Cross”.  The choirs all performed well together and the band sounded amazing along with us.

After the performance, the conductor of the RAAF band presented us with a medallion as a token to remember our participation in the performance with them.  The students were also excited to see one of the original singers in the crowd from the group “The Sapphires”.
