Reconciliation Week

Uncle Bill Nicholson Reconciliation Week

On Tuesday 29 May, the Year 7's were visited by Uncle Bill Nicholson. Uncle Bill taught us about Wurundjeri culture and showed us aboriginal tools that they used including, spears and boomerangs.

He was more than happy to answer any questions that the Year 7's asked and encouraged us to show empathy by making us think about what we would do in certain situations that Indigenous Australians have experienced.

In conclusion, Uncle Bill taught us the importance of aboriginal culture and even if it’s different, you should always respect it.

Indigenous Weaving Class

On Monday 28 May, some of the students from Year 7 and Year 9 got the chance to create traditional indigenous baskets with two local indigenous women; Aunty Aurore and Felicity.

We made the baskets out of a material called raffia, which is like a long piece of straw, but they are traditionally made from a long leaf.  The baskets can take from a day to a whole week to make, so the baskets we made were only small.

During the session, we also learnt a little bit about 'Indigenous Australians' and what they used the baskets for. Creating the baskets was such a fun and enjoyable experience and we hope we can do it again sometime.
