Language Perfect World Championships News
The World Championships in Language Learning finished at 4pm, Thursday 25 May. Our students have been absolutely exceptional this year and we have smashed our previous records for the number of points earned and certificates awarded.
Currently we have 57 certificates: 7 Gold, 6 Silver, 20 Bronze and 24 Credit. There is a real battle going on for top student with the winner having his or her name engraved on a special plaque.
Students from 1,200 schools and 27 countries have participated (about 140,000 students in all). Amidst this competition, our school is placed for our size division SECOND in Victoria for French (out of 32 schools) and THIRD in Australia (out of 225 schools). We have placed ahead of such schools as the Knox School, MacRobertson High Girls' School and Presbyterian Ladies College.
Our students have really made us so proud - it is a long competition and, like any marathon, requires focus and persistence. FANTASTIQUE BELGRAVE!

Accelerated Reader 2017 Trial
Here at Belgrave Heights Christian School we are committed to doing all that we can to empower students to thrive and do their own personal best in their learning. One thing parents often ask is “what is the best way to help my child improve in their reading?”. In response to this question, we've designed an initiative that we think will help our students and we would like to run a trial to make sure it really will work to empower our students to do their own personal best.
The Renaissance Learning Accelerated Reader program is a comprehensive reading program that promotes personalised reading practice and provides teachers with the data they need to move students towards success. Students simply choose a book which is at their level, read it, complete a quiz and get immediate feedback. Students get excited and motivated when they see their progress and teachers can ensure that a student’s independent reading is always at the right level and helping to improve their reading.
Students who are selected to participate in this trial need to commit to reading their selected books for 10 to 20 minutes per night, six days per week. Parents are required to attend the launch night and source books for their children to read, either from the school library, local library, shops or online. Parents will receive bi-monthly feedback on how their child is improving in their reading across the course of the trial and will be required to complete a quick survey at the end of the trial.
The trial will be running from June to December, 2017, and is open to students in all year levels up to Year 9. Spaces are limited to 50 in 2017, so get in quick! The launch event will be held on Wednesday, June 28th in the Discovery Centre, with the student session beginning at 3.30pm and the parents joining the students to receive further information at 4pm. Further details will be forwarded once applications are finalised.
If you would like your child to participate in this trial, please fill in this form.
Applications close on Wednesday, June 14th and applicants will be notified by Friday, June 16th whether they were one of the first 50 successful applicants.
For further information, please contact Mr Dave Hughes dhughes@bhcs.vic.edu.au.

Why Music?
Mostly because it brings happiness to performer and audience.
Why Music at School ?
Music stimulates the entire brain! Music incorporates and develops skills in, and for, a variety of other subject areas.
Science - Music is exact. Music is specific. Music demands exact acoustics. A conductor’s full score is a chart or graph indicating frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with precise control of time.
Maths - Music is rhythmically based on fractions of time which are performed instantaneously.
Language - Music relates highly to foreign language in particular. Musical terms are in Italian German and French. Notation is a highly developed shorthand of symbols. Music is a universal language. Songs cross cultures.
Physical Education - Music requires coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek and facial muscles. Music requires control of the diaphragm, back, stomach and chest muscles to respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.
Art - Music allows people to take difficult and technical manipulation of an instrument or sound(s) to create emotion.
Why Music at BHCS ?
To enjoy all the aspects discussed above - especially promoting joy for the musician and listener SO … why not get involved ?
Aside from music in the curriculum students are encouraged to participate in our various singing groups at Junior, Middle and Senior school levels. We also have private instrument or vocal tuition options available and participation in our newly established Band which meets Tuesday mornings before school.
Staff and parents are also most welcome to discuss how they can be involved with music with us.
For further details on Music @ BHCS please contact Darryl Thompson.
We also cordially invite anyone linked to the BHCS community to attend our first Musical Soirée to be held in the Hills Restaurant at BHCS on Tuesday, 6th June from pm. This is always a wonderful evening to encourage our developing musicians with a relaxed opportunity to perform for family and friends.
We hope you can come and share the joy of music with us !
