WELC Report

Message from the WELC Coordinator

- Ms. Carmela Santucci

Welcome to all our new students and welcome back to our returning students!

Term 4 will be busy as many students are preparing for their transition into mainstream schools, which includes students attending Orientation Days and Head Start programs. The intensive nature of the New Arrivals Program offers the best opportunity for students to prepare for further studies in an Australian school.

Students, who are into their 2nd term in the Language Centre, have demonstrated an increased confidence in their language skills. They communicate with their teachers and other staff members clearly and initiate conversations at a personal level. Communication and interaction amongst the student cohort also demonstrates the growth in English language skills.

Students in the Language Centre are encouraged to “have a go” as language learning is about experimenting, making mistakes and learning from mistakes. The teachers and our aides are always available to encourage, support and assist students to develop independent learning skills.

'Yishu' Arts and LOTE Festival Opening

The second week of Term 2 was Art Week and some of the Language Centre students, once again, performed during the Arts Festival Opening.  This year, the students were allocated two items:  the music class presented a song by the Australian band, Birds of Tokyo, called ‘Lanterns’, which highlighted many of the students’ talents on the keyboards and guitars.  Other of our students participated in a hip-hop workshop and presented the dance they learnt to the school during the Opening.

Congratulations to all the performers – you did a fantastic job!  Everyone was impressed by the courage you showed to get up in front of everyone to perform, and your successful performances demonstrated all the hard work you had put in to practising.

Below are reflections of the performances by two of the students involved.

Last Monday period 4, we danced the Hip-Hop.  At first, we were scared and felt a little hesitant.  It was about 11:30, we went to change our clothes to look like a real Hip-Hopper.  Then we went to the dance room with a nervous mood.  The teacher came and started to teach us.  We were a little bit bumpy during the practising. However, we overcame the psychological barriers and did well on the performance. We had an unforgettable experience that day.

The people in the music class are all happy about choosing music class.  We like to learn singing, dancing and playing music instruments in class.  We learnt the song, “Lantern”, for performing at the last week for Year 12. Some people volunteered to play guitar or violin, and the others were singing.  We were nervous before we got up but we are happy about our performance.  Maybe we can learn more songs if there was more time.
