TOMORROW'S LEADERS

Our East and West School Captains are featured in this week's Knox Leader with other local school captains answering "What difference can your generation make to the world?" Read the story here.

BACKGROUND

They are often accused of being the generation of me, but Melbourne’s Year 12 school captains are doing their bit to dispel the myth of selfish Generation Z. In one of the most comprehensive school projects ever attempted, Leader Community News asked nearly 300  captains from all over Melbourne: What difference can your generation make to the world? Read it here.

THE BROTHERS GRIMM SPECTACULATHON

RIA presents The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon!

Two narrators attempt to recreate all 209 of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in a wild, fast-paced extravaganza. To make it more difficult, they attempt to combine them into one gigantic fable using Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and other more obscure stories like Lean Lisa and The Devil’s Grandmother. This is a comedic, light hearted – Monty-Pythonesque – play for the whole family. The performance is a one-act 60 minute show.

Performance dates are Thursday 2nd May at 7pm & Friday 3rd May at 7pm. Click here to buy tickets

VCAL MINUTE TO WIN IT CHALLENGE

On Thursday March 21st our East Year 12 VCAL students ran a Minute to Win It Challenge session with our Junior AFL students. The focus of the session was teamwork, communication, leadership and FUN! The senior students coordinated the 50 year 7 and 8 students into 8 groups, where the senior students ran a series of interactive challenge activities. Some of the popular challenges included the Egg Catch, Hang Time and Handball Madness.

It was great to see the senior students role modelling positive leadership and communication skills with the junior students and everyone had fun throughout the session. Congrats to the Purple team who were our overall winners for the day!

YEAR 10 INTERNATIONAL FOOD EXPO

As part of the Year 10 Design Technology – Food curriculum, students investigate the role of immigration and the impact on the Australian cuisine we see now. In pairs, students were required to investigate a country, identify 6 traditional dishes and justify why a dish they chose was a suitable representation of their country. On Thursday 14th March they then prepared their dishes for a multicultural expo. During the expo they needed to give a very small talk to the class about how their dish represented their country. A great job by all students.

RELAY FOR LIFE

The Knox Relay for Life has been running for the last eight years and one of our school families the Formichelli’s participated in this on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th March for their sixth year running.

Ms. Formichelli said  “Over the years many of our children's friends from Rowville Secondary College have come along and walked some laps for us. The walk is organised by the Cancer Council and our team name is 'La famiglia'. This year was even more important for us to participate in the relay as our daughter Isabella (past student) was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in January. It was wonderful to see some of my son’s friends from RSC come and support him and our family. Isabella is doing well and the doctors are pleased with her progress so far. Our family had the honour of carrying the survivors and carers banner to open the relay. The relay was on March 16th from 4pm until Sunday March 17th at 10am. Donations can still be made to our team by clicking here."

YEAR 7 BOYS TENNIS

Written by Lachlan Foster, Year 7 student.

On Monday 25th March,  we chose to participate in matches of tennis, playing and competing against different schools around our area including Upwey, Fairhills and Boronia. I paired up with Jay, and won our match 4-0. Then we watched James and Max take on their opponents and Rhylee and Kuvams challengers.

After, we all had a hit around with each other, practicing our skills and having good fun. Then we boarded the bus and went home.  Thank you Mr. Sherlock for the awesome day! (and the ice-creams).

BOOK TASTING WITH A FAMOUS INTERNATIONAL AUTHOR

On Thursday 13th March, two of our Year 8 English students, Athena Kaye and Krisahna Demetriou were present at the Knox Literacy Workshop, held at Boronia K-12.  They had the amazing opportunity to meet with and listen to international author, Jackie French who has written over 140 books. This interactive workshop saw all students produce some examples of explosive writing, with Anthena's work being praised by Ms French for, "writing a fascinating, gorgeous and wonderful response!"

The workshop was  streamed live to other schools and students came away with some valuable tips on the importance of reading and how to "taste" a book.  Rowville Secondary College will be having its very own Book Tasting and Supper  for parents, carers and students during Literacy Week and we hope Anthena and Krisahna will add some flavour to the evening.

WELL DONE INTERMEDIATE CRICKET TEAM

I had the pleasure of taking out the intermediate cricket team earlier this month. The team was a combination of year 8 and year 9 boys. We had trained three times in the lead up to match day. We played the East A and bowled quite well but they bowled better, they were not overawed by them at all.  In our last game we rotated the boys around to give everyone a bat, as games were only 10 overs long, but this is a game we could quite well have won against Wantirna.

We weathered the elements (rain, wind, hail and sun) and had a terrific day. The boys really teamed together well and gave their best and represented our school and themselves positively.

The team:

Mario Chaisawas, Tyler Evans, Josh Gerreyn, Campbell Gilbert, Jack Halabi, Cooper McCay, Mujtaba Mohebbi, Cooper Naylor, Mitch Neylan, Bryan Nguyen, Bastian Roy, Brayden Rumpf, Charlie Suisted.

RSA FOOTBALLERS WIN

Our year 7 boys played their first competitive game in Rowville colours against Overnewton SC last week and in a very close game came out 2-1 winners with goals from Raul Afonso and Alex Joowon. Well done boys AND Alana Murphy.

MSA ZEBRA FISH

Earlier this term our year 10 MSA class had the exciting opportunity of working with Monash University and their staff in breeding and monitoring the growth of Zebrafish embryos. The fish and all equipment and materials were provided by Monash University as part of the genetic program where students dive deeper into their study of how character traits are inherited by offspring. As the embryos developed, students were able to watch under the microscope as the embryos grew and developed features that were characteristic of either their mother or father. This is possible as zebrafish embryos’ are transparent. It was a very successful program with the zebrafish safely returned to Monash University.

VICSRC WORKSHOP

On Monday 25th March, Maverick Taylor, Brianna Collins and Alison Hughes attended a VicSRC Student Voice workshop at Carwatha College.

Mav, Brianna and Alison worked with students and staff from other local schools to identify ways to increase student voice in the College. Brianna and Alison, both being on School Council, and Mav, East Campus Vice School Captain, worked collaboratively to come up with various strategies and ideas on how to increase student voice around the College.

All three students worked extremely well throughout the day and have developed some great ideas. We look forward to hearing about these in the near future. Well done Mav, Brianna and Alison.
