Hi all,

This is Lucy D, Jaimie M, Siobhan D and Athan S. We are the 2019 student leaders of Clifton Hill Primary School. What an amazing year it has been! Time really has flown this year. We have achieved so much this year and each leader, as well as each and every student at Clifton Hill Primary School, demonstrated their leadership, organisation and kindness. From prep all the way to grade six, every individual has shone in their own way this year. In terms of the school captains, we have all achieved so much this year and every event has had a different impact on each captain this year.

Jaimie

This year has been such a fabulous experience for me. We have had so many opportunities come our way this year, but we had to work for them, they weren’t just handed to us. Whether it be MC-ing at Gold Street’s Got Talent or starting up an amazing action team that has helped so many kids, I feel I have really made myself proud this year. Some of the highlights for me of being a school captain were: Gold Street’s got talent, Footy Colours day, successfully running pyjama day, where we raised over $600 and even the little things, like becoming a school role model and saying jokes at assembly in Joke Time with Jaimie. When I look back at my old, new-to-grade-six self back at the start of the year, I know I could’ve improved a lot! I was still trying to figure things out, constantly trying so hard to get the little kids to like me. Really, the one thing I needed to tell myself was that I could just be myself. I needed to stop acting like the calm, chillaxed, naturally organised person I wanted to be and show everyone my crazy, outgoing, gets-excited-about EVERYTHING self. Little did I know, people would like me for who I am. This is how Joke Time with Jaimie started! Another part of my role as a school captain was to get other people involved in things like speaking at assembly and in the action teams. These people have demonstrated to me what a leader really is, not someone who is in the spotlight but a person who acts kind and generous whether people notice or not. I am incredibly grateful for these people. Finally, I am so lucky that I have spent the past few terms working with such a gorgeous leadership team. We all work really well together and make a great team. Athan, Lucy and Siobhan are some of the kindest role models I have ever met, and I am so grateful that I got to work with them this year! Also a big thank you to Emily who made this year, even at its busiest times, so much easier for all of us. We all really look up to you.

Athan

This year has been such an awesome experience and I’m so grateful to have worked with so many great people in the school. This year made me more responsible and has improved my cooperation skills and taught me how to show leadership skills. It’s awesome that grade 6s get the chance to become involved in being leaders for our school, even if it’s just helping a little kid when they fall down or encouraging a friend when they are nervous about something. All these small things mean so much and so many older students at the school have been role models and shown kindness to help our community.

A main highlight of the year for me is working with Ruby, Orla, Alice, Kiki, Mardi, Ivy & Sophie as part of the Bathroom Badness Action Team. The members in this team have shown incredible initiative in achieving our goal of putting sanitary bins in girls’ toilets at the school. Another highlight is helping organise Footy Colours Day and other fundraisers to help charities such as the Fight Cancer Foundation.

I’m very lucky to have been able to work with the other school captains, Siobhan, Jaimie & Lucy over the year. They have taught me a lot and they are excellent role models to our school. Also a big thanks to Emily who has helped us so much in this experience and even when she is very busy has always made the job so much easier for us.

Children are the next politicians, leaders, generation. It is so cool that at a primary school we have created this leadership program because our school has never done it this way before. 2019 school captains was a trial year to see if this would work. We might not have created world peace yet because we are just kids and we don’t have the opportunities to do huge things for the world YET. And that is why school captains was a fantastic way to learn how to be responsible leaders so that when we are older we can help others. We have achieved a lot for our school and our community this year with the help of students in the school. Some achievements of the school captains and student leaders this year have been raising $600 dollars for the starlight foundation ( Jaimie’s action team put an enormous amount of work into this event ) hosting assemblies, MC ing and organising gold st got talent etc.

I remember as a prep up to grade 5 going to watch gold st got talent and everything looked like it was running smoothly. As school captain I have realised that there is a lot of work to make this event happen and I am glad that I was able to help out and have responsibility. I think a big part of school captains is learning that we shouldn’t rely on teachers all the time but if we want things that we need to put in the work. Students can organise events too and this has been shown when we organised PJ day. I think for everyone involved in gold st got talent ( 5s ad 6s ) it is a really great experience and also developed gratitude for what amazing things and events that we have at this school.

Organising wash against waste for the fair was another big thing for me as a school captain. It was stressful and sometimes I felt scared that I would not be able to get enough people to volunteer but after some organising ( and a lot of running around to classes ) wash against waste was a huge success at the fair and it is such an awesome thing to help stop our schools impact on the environment.

Throughout 2019 numerous leadership opportunities have been presented to me and to our school, one significantly being able to take the role of one of our four school captains. This year, Siob, Athan, Jaimie and I were lucky enough to become 2019’s school captains! Before this experience we were friends, but us being school captains was definitely an amazing way for us to tighten our bonds and improve our cooperative and leadership skills. I was lucky enough to be able to become closer with three inspiring, amazing individuals who I was fortunate enough to be able to work with to try and make our school a better place. Along with this, being a school captain has also allowed each of us to achieve personal goals.

Midway through the year we had a Student Parliament where valuable ideas were voted in by each class as we were asked to present to the entire Year 6 cohort and Megan, our principal. After, we were asked to vote on four ideas we thought were the most important and influential. These ideas would go on to become action teams with each school captain being assigned to one of the teams. The team I became part of was the Sponsor Child action team, created by three of my friends Amelie, Dora and Louisa from 6GB. Together, we achieved some spectacular goals, if I do say so myself 😄! Aided by the Smith Family Foundation, our original goal was to raise enough money to sponsor a single child for one year. To do this we needed to raise a total of $624. In two months, we somehow raised over this amount! As us four will be leaving Clifton Hill Primary to begin high school next year, we have asked some responsible Year 5s to continue our mission and we are thrilled that we have accomplished such a large goal and may even be able to sponsor two children sometime soon. Though this has definitely been a brilliant opportunity for Amelie, Dora, Louisa and I as a team, it has also helped me achieve some personal goals. At the end of 2018, my new year’s resolution for 2019 was to become a kinder individual who can give back to the community. Through the action team and by becoming a school captain, I have finally been able to give back.
