Primary Particulars
It's been another whirlwind two weeks in the primary department. Year 3/4 have been busy working on their English reading, spelling and writing skills; focusing on sentence structure, punctuation and grammar. Year 5/6 are completing an English unit on 'Wing', an anti-bullying resource that the children are basing narrative writing on.
K-6 had a fantastic visit from Questacon on Friday afternoon, with lots to see and do in the field of science, technology and engineering. The focus of the show was on forces and molecules with students being shown experiments involving bridges, engineering, balloons and even a lit-up teabag! Our presenters were great at explaining scientific concepts in easy language, and lot of kids got involved in the experiments. Check out the Questacon website for roadshows in Goulburn and Young in coming weeks.
Well done to all of our Western Region Swimming representatives last week. You did our school and district proud! See Sport for more details.
Thank-you to all who attended our big Assembly on Friday 8th March. It was great to see so many students achieving great things across all areas of school. We also were treated to some great performances from the Year 1/2 and Year 5/6 classes. We look forward to our next big Assembly in week 11.
We have a strong focus on making good decisions in both the classroom and the playground, and this is constantly reinforced and rewarded. We strive every day to make a positive learning environment for all of our students. The children are showing plenty of signs of good decision making.
Harmony Day
Years 3-6 created lanterns for Harmony Day to celebrate Chinese New Year. We welcomed Lauren Frith Arts Co-ordinator for Hilltops Council into both the primary classrooms to teach our students to make lanterns, use calligraphy skills and inform them of the Chinese culture and New Year celebrations. There is a Sunset Lantern Parade running in Young on March 30 from 7:30pm for the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival which students are more than welcome to attend (meeting from 6:45pm at the Salvation Army Hall on Clarke St). We thank Mrs Harpley for organising the visit and Lauren for her assistance in helping us celebrate multiculturalism in our community.
Music Matters
The year 5/6 class had their first taste of playing instruments for the year last week. We explored the correct way to hold and play both ukuleles and guitars in the music room in the high school. The students showed great potential as future musicians, with some even managing to play a few chords and notes. There will be a focus on performance in music throughout the year as we will also get some teaching support from the Young Regional School of Music in term 2.

Infants
Harmony Day
K-2 celebrated Harmony Day today focusing on getting along with others, being kind and considerate, respecting the opinions of others and learning about different cultures. Infants students made a harmony tree which is on display in the infants hallway, learnt how to say hello in different languages and coloured in harmony birds.
Circus Challenge
K-8 students enjoyed a performance by the Australian Circus Company. Everyone enjoyed the circus show with a number of students and staff being enticed out to the front to show their hidden circus skills. Circus skills were honed at the workshop afterwards.
Buddy Bears
Kindergarten and their Year 6 buddies spent some time together this week. The Kindergarten children very proudly showed their buddies that they can already read a book. Year 6 were very impressed.
