Principal Report

Welcome Back!

It has been wonderful to see everyone after the school holidays. There have been many stories from families and staff about the fun activities and adventures everyone had. We now begin our 2nd term for our inaugural year of Dohertys Creek P-9 College and we are extremely excited!

It is with a sad heart that we are also dealing with the tragedies in New Zealand and Sri Lanka. After talking with many members of the community, the shock and concern for their families and friends are at the forefront of their minds. Our thoughts and hearts go out to all that have been affected by these tragedies. For those who are effected, please let us know if there is anything we can do to support you during this time.

Mother’s Day Stall

On Thursday the 9th of May, students will have the opportunity to purchase a gift for $5 for their Mother or significant females in their life. One gift can be purchased on this day. For any students who wish to purchase another gift, the stall will be open on Friday 10th May. This is so we are sure that every child gets the opportunity to purchase at least 1 gift.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will commence on Monday the 13th of May. NAPLAN testing is for Grades 3 and 5 students. A brochure is in the newsletter with more information. Please reassure your child/ren that this testing period is a glimpse into their learning at one point in time. The work that they do on an ongoing basis in school in many areas is just as important and NAPLAN is part of that process. During this time children can become extremely anxious. Please ensure they are getting to bed at a reasonable time and are eating properly.

AtoSS (Attitudes to School Survey)

Students in Grades 4-6 will be given a survey about how they feel about school and the areas where they feel the school needs to improve. These results form part of the school’s plan moving forward and is a wonderful opportunity for students to voice their opinion. Attached is a letter with more information.

ANZAC Day

On Thursday the 25th of April students and staff attended the Werribee ANZAC Day dawn service. One of our school captains Morgan Hurley laid the wreath that was made by students to show our respect to the service men and women past and present. It was great to see so many families in the community taking the time to stop and reflect on how lucky we are to be living in this country and for the people who have helped and continue to give their time and sometimes lives to make Australia the wonderful place it is today.

School Photos

Just a reminder that school photos will be held on 23rd of May. Full school uniform will need to be worn on this day. Photo envelopes will be handed out this week and all payments can be made online. Please return the photo envelopes on Photo Day. If you would like sibling photos, please pick up an envelope at the front office.

Flu Vaccinations

Live Well Medical Clinic came out last week to give families flu vaccinations. It was a huge success (they ran out of vaccinations) and due to high demand, they are going to organise another time to come out to the school to offer this service. It was a kind gesture, and we are happy to be working with services in the community and will continue to do this.

Canteen

It is so exciting to see the Creek Café (school canteen) open this term. They have a wonderful menu and online ordering to save families time and the concern of their children handling money. The Creek Café is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday at this point in time. Information has been sent out through COMPASS and in the previous newsletter.

Playground

Within the next 2 weeks the playground will be installed and the students will be able to use by the end of term. The playground will be placed on Wirrigirri Oval, the green space next to the administration building (Wirrigirri) which faces Elmhurst Road. Due to parent and student feedback and support we have built a sandpit near Balam Balam (P-2 area) and have purchased sporting equipment for each classroom for the children to use during play times.

Uniform

As the weather is starting to change, please ensure your child is wearing the correct school uniform. Blue tights are to be worn under dresses and the school jumper to be worn over the school tops. Please remember to label your child’s uniform. Noone Imagewear has embroidery available if you would like to ensure that your child’s name does not wear off from washing and can be easily returned.
