Principal Message

Message from the College Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Wednesday 27 March, we held our Annual General Meeting where our School Councillors were welcomed and nominated for office bearer positions.  I would like to congratulate Robert Wall on his appointment to School Council President, Anne Marie Parkinson to Vice President and Emma Gillman to Treasurer. We also presented our 2018 Annual Report to School Council. This report shares 2018 College achievements and provides information on how our improvement efforts have impacted student outcomes. During Term 2, our Annual Report will be shared with our school community through our College website.

I would like to thank Matt Naudi and our French team for all of their preparation and hard work in organising our Sister School Visit.  Matt Naudi, Roshini Muslayah, Olivia Migani and Lucy Knowles will be accompanying 12 students to visit College Sainte Marie from 16 April – 2 May.  Our sister school visit provides an opportunity for the students involved to increase their cultural awareness and respect for each other’s culture, strengthens our teaching and learning of the French language and builds a wider international perspective for our College. The students will also enjoy the opportunity to learn about French history and tour some of the famous sights of Paris and Rouen. We hope everyone involved has a fantastic time and we look forward to sharing their journey with our community, when they return next term.

This year we have also introduced College house captains in Year 4 (Junior Deputy House Captains), Year 6 (Deputy House Captains) and Year 9 (House Captains).

I would to acknowledge the work of John Eskander, Bonne Keating, Chris Page and Jessica Harris who have done an amazing job over the past 8 weeks in selecting all of our student leaders and working with all our leaders to develop roles and responsibilities.

A reminder that next week, we have our Semester 1 Parent Teacher interviews. PTIs are an opportunity for our parents, students and teachers to reflect on the progress reported in the Term 1 Reporting Portfolios. We view Parent Teacher Interviews as a valuable component of our home school partnership and encourage all parents to make a time to meet with their child’s teacher. Year 7-9 students will have an early dismissal of 12:30pm on Tuesday 2 April and Wednesday 3 April, as their Parent Teacher Interviews commence at 1pm on both days.

We would like to thank our students and families for a wonderful Term 1.

Stay safe and enjoy the holidays. We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 23 April ready to commence a great Term 2.

Kind Regards

Paris Spencer

Middle Years

I can’t believe we are approaching the end of Term 1 already. We have had a number of significant events in the Middle Years in the past few weeks.

First of all, I would like to congratulate students and staff for making Harmony Day at our College a big success for 2019. Students participated in various classroom activities throughout the day and they were treated to some very special musical productions to celebrate the many diverse cultures we have at our College. We are very lucky to have so many talented young people and the students and staff really enjoyed the performances.

This week we had our Year 6 Summer Sports Gala. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet other students from around the area and test their skills in their respective sports.

A reminder to students to continue their learning at home over the holidays. In particular our Year 5 students with NAPLAN next term. Enjoy your break and we look forward to welcoming you all back in Term 2.

Senior Years

Our Year 7-9 students have had a great second half of Term 1. Students have been engaged in a wide range of learning activities both in the classroom and outside. Our Year 8 students have attended the Earth Education Program in Ballarat, where they engaged in some hands-on scientific activities that extended their scientific knowledge. Our Year 7 students have successfully continued their integration in to secondary school by participating in more inter-school sporting competitions and embedding everyday routines of a secondary school student. Our Year 9 students are beginning to look at Career Pathways and will be sitting an assessment in the next week to provide students and families with suggestions and an appropriate career pathway.

We look forward to a busy Term 2 with a range of learning opportunities for all our year 7-9 students.

Curriculum

As quickly as the term started, it is now coming to an end.  It has been such a great term watching our students learn and grow. Parents please do not forget that portfolios are due home this week - this is a great opportunity to sit down with your child and have a look at some samples of work and talk about the learning occurring at school.

Next week we have Parent Teacher Interviews. Parent Teacher Interviews is the perfect time to talk about your child’s progress and clarify any questions you may have. You may even want to chat with your child’s teacher about how you can support your child with their learning at home. Please keep an eye out for the booking note sent home about how to book in a time slot with your child’s teacher - try and book as early as possible to avoid missing out on your preferred time slot.

Please stay safe over the holiday period and enjoy the much deserved break. If you struggle with ways to entertain your child over the holidays, please remember that there are always lots of great places you can visit that will help stimulate a love of learning. They make great family day outs - Melbourne Museum, ACMI, Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne Zoo and Old Melbourne Gaol (for the older students) are great places within the city that you can visit. They are both educational and provide great holiday activities.

Closer to home there is Scienceworks and Werribee Zoo which are both fun days out. Don’t forget that you do not have to the break the budget to keep your child’s mind and body active over the holidays. You may want go to the library to borrow some books that they can read over the holidays or attend Aquapulse for a fun day of swimming. These are all very affordable activities that is great for them too.
