Principal's Report
Compass
Discussions at the most recent School Council Meeting focussed on the successful introduction of the COMPASS communication and reporting system at Ormond Primary School. It was clear that the staged introduction of a COMPASS-based Mid-year and End of Year Report had drawn very favourable comments and feedback from a broad range of parents. The reporting of students’ performances in English and Mathematics in the first phase and then the addition of all other subjects in the second phase had proved to be a sound strategy. It is clear that the school is ready to plan for the roll out of the remaining elements of the COMPASS package.
It is timely that Jan Cassidy and Brodie Thomson will now be attending a series of COMPASS training module sessions around payments and on line parental approvals for excursions and in-school events. It is planned to introduce these services during Term 3 2016. All communications about these developments will be conveyed through the fortnightly iNewsletter.

Friday, 15th of July

- Professional Learning Team Planning
Monday, 29th of August

Timber Surrounds for the Play Equipment Areas - A Facilities Development Project
The ongoing improvement of the school grounds is a key focus of the School Council and the Facilities & Environment Sub-committee. This year the Facilities & Environment Sub-committee is seeking the involvement and support of skilled and enthusiastic volunteers from within the Ormond community. It is envisaged that trade-focussed parents would lead, advise and work with a project work force comprised of parents and the principal.
This project is aimed at creating timber edging/low seating around the existing play areas under the oak trees and gum trees. As well as creating some much needed passive seating areas, the edging will more effectively contain the soft, under equipment playground mulch. This will mean that all future working bees will not be totally taken up with shovelling the mulch back under the equipment. If you are interested in being involved in these works please let me know by email at: butler.glenn.d@edumail.vic.gov.au
Assessment and Reporting
This is a major focus of the school and is co-ordinated by one of our Leading Teachers, Sally Berryman.
- Ongoing Assessment
At all year levels teachers conduct on-going assessments of students in the form of pre- and post-tests relating to units of work in English, Mathematics and Inquiry Learning (Science, Humanities, Economics, Technology, The Arts). An Assessment Schedule is also used in a cohesive manner across the school in order to identify students’ specific learning needs and achievements. This schedule also includes formalised testing such as NAPLAN (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation, Numeracy) and the University of New South Wales Tests (English & Mathematics).
- Written Reports & Interviews
All students will receive a Mid-year Report on Friday, 17th of June. This will be followed with Parent-Teacher Interviews on Monday and Tuesday of the following week.
- Student-led Conferences
Student-led Conferences have been planned for the end of Term 3. This will be an opportunity for all students to present their ‘Learning Journey Folios’ to their parents and teachers. This is great opportunity to celebrate each child’s achievements against their learning goals.
Education Week
Education Week celebrations at Ormond will take the form of an Open Evening on Tuesday, 10th of May from 6:30 – 7:20 pm. Education Week across Victoria will be from the15th – 21st of May with a focus on Technology in Schools.
NAPLAN Testing
All Year 3 and 5 students will be involved in NAPLAN testing on Tuesday 10th , Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th of May. I encourage all students to embrace the challenge of these formalised tests in the knowledge that the hard work that they have shown over all their years at school will stand them in good stead during the NAPLAN tests.
