Environment & Sustainability
CERES Student Environment Leadership Program
On Tuesday 21 February, the Environment Captains along with a dozen passionate Level 5 students attended an excursion to CERES.
It was an incredible experience and a real eye opener to the positive impact that young people can have on sustainability challenges facing our school. The day began with a discussion around waste and adjusting our attitudes using the 6Rs (Rethink, Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Rot). There was even a cool catchy dance to help us remember. When analysing our waste audit, we quickly realised that contamination was a huge problem and so we participated in a waste race to sort rubbish into the different bins. This is a skill we want the whole student community to practice at next week’s multi age day. The educators took us on a guided tour of the facilities to help give us ideas for projects we can implement back at Jells Park. We saw chickens, composting, bin systems, bike workshops and much more. In groups we selected an idea and developed an action plan including the what, why, who, how to help map out the steps to achieving our goals. To finish the day, we turned old T-shirts into bags, showing that we can reuse items that perhaps we would normally chuck out into landfill.
We are so pumped to make a difference and we hope the rest of the school can get fired up! Small actions, big impact!
