Performing Arts Co-Curricular Program

Welcome to 2023! We have hit the ground running this year, with the Choir, Ensembles, and Creative Music in Schools students rehearsing for the Opening Mass. It has been a lovely way to come together and start the new year.

Ensembles 2023

Marian College Choir and Gospel Choir - United have come together this year, making one larger choir that will sing gospel, pop, classical, and music theatre pieces with different teacher and student leaders, supporting the College's Masses and Assemblies, as well as preparing for our Showcase performances. The Performing Arts leaders and students are working on the final name for the Choir that will include both groups, and this will be announced in the next newsletter.

Mass rehearsals began immediately, and individual ensemble rehearsals are starting over the next two weeks.

Marian College Choir and Gospel Choir - United: rehearses each Monday in Music 1 at Lunch. New members are welcome starting next week.

Play Ukelele!: rehearses each Tuesday in Music 2 at Lunch. New members are welcome starting next week.

Concert Band: rehearses each Thursday 3.15-4.15pm in Music 2. New members with experience on Concert Band instruments are welcome to join, and should DM Mari Eleanor to organise enrolment.

Rock Band: new this year! Rehearses Tuesday at Lunch and Thursday 3.15-4.15pm in Practice Room 1

Creative Music in Schools

Piano and Violin lessons with Annie Bui begin this week on Thursdays.

We thank all our staff and students for what we know is going to be a great term. Future Marian News articles will be written by our students leaders, sharing updates from the Performing Arts program but also news from each ensemble. Watch this space!

Year 10 Excursion to 'Storytime Ballet: Sleeping Beauty'  at the Comedy Theatre

On Saturday 28 January, the Year 9 Elective Dance students of 2022 attended a performance of 'Storytime Ballet' at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne's CBD. The performance we saw was 'Sleeping Beauty', which was performed by The Australian Ballet. 'Sleeping Beauty' tells the tale of a jealous fairy who casts an evil spell on the princess - putting her to sleep for a hundred years. She is only rescued from her slumber when she is given a kiss from her true love - the handsome prince. In this day and age, we all agreed that the story could do with a bit of re-working. We are all now capable of 'rescuing' ourselves - rather than relying on a handsome prince to save the day. Stories aside, the dancing was magnificent and served as an inspiring afternoon for us all.
