The highlight in January has been our BLM week and the start of Black History Month. All advisories participated in BLM activities for all 5 days of BLM week. We had extended advisories to begin making our school quilt. If you would like more information regarding the school quilt, please click here.
This link gives you an example other work we are doing.
We have a week left until a well deserved break from school. We will be off from school when we dismiss on the 17th, and we will return on Feb 27. Also, don't forget that students are off on March 6 and 7.
Our winter sports teams are having great seasons. It was a really slow start for nordic skiing, but they got up to Prospect Mountain on Wednesday, and they were excited to go. Our girl's basketball team is very competitive and has won and lost some really tight games. We have 2 boys teams, and they are both having good seasons. Some terrific athletes at BAMS this year!
This Brattleboro Reformer article features work several of our students did as part of a project taught by 8th grade social studies teacher Scott Davenport. The students did a terrific job!
Five of our students won the Southeast Vermont championships this past weekend. They go to States in April. Congratulations! Pictured from Left to Right: Adviser Peggy Maxfield, Charlie, Jude, Maayan, Jeffery and William.
Our Parent Liaison Ms. Doreen Burke is collaborating to create a display/informational booth at the Brattleboro Winter Farmers Market! See Flyer Here
Our school Leadership Team and the administration have been discussing ways to make the school safer for students. One of the areas we have decided to target is our bathrooms. Although many students won't like the changes we are implementing, they are needed to make everyone feel safer. In addition to these changes, we will be installing vaping detectors in our bathrooms to continue our efforts to eliminate vaping and other unsafe activities in school.
Beginning on Monday, February 13, we will be following a new routine for leaving the classroom to use the bathroom and get a drink.

The original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof opened in 1964 and ran for a total of 3,242 performances. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography. Fiddler on the Roof has been revived on Broadway five times, the first of which won the Tony Award for Best Revival. The story centers on Tevye, a milkman in the village of Anatevka, who attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon his family's lives. He must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters who wish to marry for love, all while the tsar is trying to evict the Jews from their villages. Fiddler on the Roof’s themes of love, repression, and prejudice are as timely today as they were when the play was first performed.
The BUHS production is directed by Rebekah F. Kersten with Stephen Rice and Julie Ackerman-Hovis as co-musical directors, Mary Linney as the costumer, Francesca Bourgault as the choreographer and lighting designer, C.R. Rose as the fight choreographer, Alan Stockwell as the sound engineer and Michelle Page as the producer. BUHS students, Remy Flood and Charlie Forthofer serve as the Stage Managers for the production. The production features Griffin Woodruff as Tevye and Michelle Liechti as the Fiddler. The ensemble cast features several talented BAMS and BUHS students; Miles Ackerman-Hovis, Lila Armour-Jones, Auzan Arvian, Kaitlyn Blouin, Lizzie Elkins, Karine Hayrapetyan, Levi Healey, Luke Horn, Bibi Johnson, Soma Lever, Lyla Magee, Isabella May, John Mosher, Leo Mousseau, Miles Rae, Zoe Peterson, Genny Schneski, Abby Sharff, Cyrus Smith, Leo Storm, Dakota VonFeldt, and Diana Webb who serves as the production’s Dance Captain.
The show’s orchestra is composed of BUHS students and local musicians; Jonas Ackerman-Hovis, David Amidon, Kathy Andrew, Wyatt Cudworth, Cara Fisher, Kyle Girard, Jon Joyce, Michelle Liechti, Lucas Majer, Darby Navage, Emily Packard, Simon Rae, Genevieve Redmond, Bill Shontz, and Jasper Woliver.
Behind the scenes, many students are involved with creating costumes, running the sound board and lights and working as the backstage crew. Crew members include Allison Ackerman-Hovis, Jesse Ackerman-Hovis, Isaiah Allen, Devin Barry-Stoughton, Madeline Berube, T. Contakos, Vivian Elliott, Sophia Hamm, Zoe Humphreys, K’alia McMurtry, Chloe O’Connell, Kira Peale, Paige Renaud, and Cyrus Smith.
Our district values your feedback! This month and into March, we will be asking you to take a brief survey to tell us about your experience with schools in Windham Southeast Supervisory Union.
To ensure we continue to provide high quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of our learners, we need your feedback. We want to know what you think. The survey will be available online beginning on February 16 and close on March 10. We will be sending out more information, including a link to the survey, next week.
We thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses. If you have any questions about the survey administration, please don’t hesitate to contact us at psmith@wsesdvt.org 802-579-1175. Thank you, WSESU
