WHAT AN "ACE" PAIR!

We had our tennis duo, Oliver and Dora, represent BPS at the District Tennis Tournament last Friday at St Thomas the Apostle Primary School. The tournament was a round robin event for our best male and female tennis players in the Blackburn District. Congratulations to Oli, who finished second to the under 12 state tennis champion. Oli will now go on to represent BPS at the division tennis championships. This is extra special as Oli is only in grade 5 and was playing players in year 6 which makes his achievement all the more special. Congratulations to Dora, who had a terrific round robin with a stunning serve, and placed 3rd in the female event. We are so proud of both athletes and their outstanding efforts. We wish Oli all the best for his adventure onwards to Division!

Cricket gift just in time for Rhea's birthday!

Congratulations to Grade 6 cricket player, Rhea, who has been selected in the SSV Team Vic cricket squad to progress to the 2nd round of the trials. This is an outstanding effort having cut the squad from 100 to 50 players!!!

Rhea will trial at the home of cricket, the MCG, on the 14th March which is also Rhea's birthday! What a present Rhea! How wonderful! We are so proud of you!

Rhea has been training really hard on all aspects of her game and earlier this year was selected to play in the Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Championship. Congratulations to you, Rhea, and your family, who give you so much support and encouragement! All the best for your second round of trials! Nothing is impossible for you!

BPS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PHOTO MURAL

Thanks to all our families who have brought along photos for our Physical Activity Photo Mural in the gym foyer. We still have lots of room for more photos and would love to put a photo of you being active outside of school up in our gym foyer. It's really great to see what our students and families get up to outside of school hours to stay fit and active. We will be spotlighting our students who have brought in photos in our BPS Sports WHO AM I at assembly each week so look out, it could be you!!

Before School Running Club

I have been encouraging all of our students to come to our before school running club to enjoy being active before school and prepare themselves for our up-coming cross country. Cross Country is an event you need to train for as unlike most of the running our students do, short bursts, cross country is an endurance event, run over a prolonged period of time. To be mentally and physically prepared, it's really wise to get some training in before our big day.

Before School Running Club is FREE and open to all grade 1 - 6 students. We run every Monday and Wednesday from 8.10am - 8.40am. If you're interested please see Mrs P for an information sheet with a permission form, they are also available on the Extra Curricular Page of this newsletter.

A reminder that this is not a babysitting service. Our motto for everyone is "If you come, you run!"

Thank you to our three wonderful families that run our program; the Battyes, Turners and Armstrongs. We appreciate your time and effort!

BPS whole school house cross country

I am excited to announce our first whole school house sporting event for 2023 is coming up on Wednesday 29th March with the back-up day on Thursday 30th March. This day is all about coming together to celebrate our students running their cross country race and doing their very best. Every child will be asked to wear their house colour on the day, preferable a t-shirt. A reminder of our four houses and their colours; Cook (red), Dampier (blue), Tasman (yellow) and Sturt (green).

The day will start on the oval at 9.10am.

Defining a few cross country race terms...

In Grade 3 - 6 students have a choice between running one of two races for their age group.

Championship race - This race is the race that doubles as our selection trial for our district cross country team. It is a longer race and 1st - 10th place ribbons are handed out to the top 10 runners. The top 10 runners are also our selected runners for district in each age and gender race. The top three runners across the line also receive medals at our presentation assembly. The house points awarded to the runners in this race is higher than that of the participation race as the runners are running a longer distance.

Students turning 8, 9, 10 in 2023 - 2km Championship Race

Students turning 11, 12 or 13 in 2023 - 3km Championship Race

Participation Race - This race is 2.5 laps of the school oval. All runners receive a Well Done ribbon and house points for their house. This race is a mixed gender race.

F-2 Runners and Grade 3 – 6 Participation Race

The first part of the day from 9.10am – 10.40am will see our whole school out on the BPS oval to encourage our F-2 and Grade 3 -6 Participation Race runners. These runners will run a course around the oval. All runners will be encouraged to jog or run the course and receive a special ribbon and points for their house at the end of their race.

Championship Races - runners in Grade 3 – 6 – 11.20am

F-2 Grades will remain inside their classrooms during this event with the option of coming out to watch if the classroom teacher chooses to do so.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION for all Championship races.

Our races will be run using both the BPS oval and a short block around Whitehorse and Surrey Roads. There will be teachers, cones and tape stationed around all sections of the course outside the school grounds to protect and guide our runners. We will close the school carpark between 11am and 1pm on this day to ensure the safety of all runners and marshals.

Presentations

There will be a presentation in the gym at 2.55pm - 3.25pm where medals will be presented to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place runners in the Championship Races. Our House Captains will also be presenting their “Never Give Up” certificates for selected students across F-6 based on their effort to persevere and not give up throughout their race.

Volunteers

To make this event possible we will require some amazing volunteers from our BPS community. All volunteers nominating will require a current Working with Children’s Check. Volunteering roles include being on marshalling points around the course to encourage our runners as well as keep them on course, the finish line, score table and time keeping/recording. All volunteers will meet at the venue at 8.45am and the event will conclude at 1pm.
