Middle School

From the Head of Middle School

As we come to the end of a busy term I would like to congratulate all the Middle School students for their endeavours this term, academically, in the Arts, on the sporting field and in their service to the School and community. I have really enjoyed attending concerts, the Technologies Showcase, sporting finals and I was was a judge in the Year Nine Hospitality competition. It is heartwarming to see students explore their passions under the guidance of our teachers and coaches. I wish every family a safe, restful and rewarding holiday.

Just a reminder when we return next term that all students need to adhere to school policies surrounding hair, jewellery and make up. Details can be found on page eight of the school diary. In Term Four students are required to wear their school bucket hat when outside. The best option here is to always keep your hat in your school bag so it is accessible; and please ensure it is clearly labelled with your first and last name.

Year Seven Service Learning

Our third group of Year Sevens have begun their in-school Service Learning at the Gilcreek Scout Camp. Mokare students have been very busy moving large branches that had fallen during recent storms, raking and spreading mulch. The students all worked together to clean up the area and will be heading back for another two sessions later in the year.

Our wonderful Year Sevens have also been out and about in the community volunteering their time. What have they been doing? Well, here is a just a snippet:

  • Umpiring
  • Coaching
  • Setting up for junior sport
  • Helping in canteens
  • Maintaining equipment and grounds
  • Participating in MS Swim-a-thon and Big Sleep Out
  • Organising fundraising for the Women’s Refuge and Daffodil Day
  • Mowing neighbours’ lawns
  • Helping out at church
  • Cleaning beaches
  • Washing cars
  • Babysitting
  • Helping grandparents
  • Helping at a riding school
  • Cleaning up tracks at a motorcycle club
  • Timekeeping and barcode scanning at parkrun

Year Nine VACS Health and Fitness

Over the past four weeks as part of the Clubs programme during VACS, 24 students have been attending F45 training at their gym in town. We have worked through a series of different circuits that can have an emphasis on cardio, flexibility or weight resistance training to name just a few. The sessions are accompanied by pumping music  and a great atmosphere. The students have absolutely loved their time and have certainly got a lot out of it. I would like to thank Aaron from F45 Training Albany for generously donating his time and equipment at no cost to the School and enthusiastically running through each session, encouraging students along the way, correcting techniques and being an all round legend.

Hospitality: Year Nine Pimped-up Noodles

At the end of the week when there’s perhaps a packet of two-minute noodles in the pantry, and a bendy carrot, wilted greens, quarter of a capsicum, a few eggs, and one slice of meat in the fridge, what do you make?  Pimped-up noodles of course!  Our Year Nine students had a fun lesson creating a range of nutritious two-minute noodle dishes using end-of-term ingredients. They chose from a range of sauces and spices in the pantry, fresh herbs from our outdoor garden, and left-over ingredients in the fridge. Mr Scott was invited to judge the final dishes.  He was impressed with all the students’ efforts.  Congratulations to India King and Georgia Williams who produced the top two tasty, pimped up noodles.
