Bravery Award

In July last year, Toby Emmett, Geoff Tozer and Geoff’s dad Micheal,  headed out for a fishing trip at Horrocks Beach, north of Perth. A rogue wave hit the boat and Mr Tozer sustained 11 broken bones in one of his legs.

Toby and Geoff navigated the turbulent waters into shore where Toby helped Mr Tozer to the beach, whilst Geoff single handily moored the boat.

Toby used a vehicle and snatch strap to pull Mr Tozer from the white wash and the boys asked beach goers to call for an ambulance. Sleeping bags were organised to keep Mr Tozer warm whilst Toby dug trenches around his leg to avoid further pain from waves.

Last Friday, Geoff and Toby were presented with The Gold Medallion Award from Royal Life Saving Western Australia, by the Honourable Kim Beasley. The award was presented for their acts of bravery in rendering reassurance and first aid to Mr Tozer until paramedics arrived on the scene.

Congratulations boys.

Exercise and Mental Health

With the weather warming up it’s the perfect time of year to get out and exercise. Exercise can have a powerful effect on our physical and mental wellbeing. Here are five reasons to increase the amount of exercise you get:

  • Exercise gives you more energy. Increasing your physical activity reduces feelings of low energy or fatigue.
  • Exercise increases self-esteem. Exercising can bring a sense of achievement which contributes to greater self-confidence and self-esteem. People who exercise regularly tend to a higher level of self-esteem and improved body image.
  • Exercise is good for your brain. Research shows exercise improves mental performance, concentration and makes us less irritable.
  • Exercise helps you sleep better. Exercise, particularly in the morning or afternoon, can help improve your sleep. Poor sleep is a common factor in many mental health conditions and improving your sleep can greatly improve the way you feel.
  • Exercise increases your body’s natural feel good chemicals. Hormones such as endorphins and certain neurotransmitters are released during exercise which will improve your mood.

How can you get started? The College has many opportunities for students to get involved in physical activity. You can join the principal’s off-road running group, use the gym, go for a walk around farm or even bring your mountain bike to ride after school!
