Wellbeing

To mark a positive start to 2020, each year level held a Parent Information Evening this week. Research supports the importance of active parental involvement in their child’s education and these evenings provided parents not only the opportunity to engage in a conversation with their daughters but to link with their daughter’s Homeroom Teacher.
Students shared with their parents, work they had completed relating to goal setting and character strengths. These conversations created an opportunity for positive communication. Parents and teachers working together to ensure students achieve their best and foster a love of learning.
At Killester College we are very keen to offer support and guidance for parents. Our website gives parents easy access to this support through Schools TV. Look for this symbol on our home page. Click on this symbol and this will lead you to short videos from leading experts of Adolescent Psychology and Education on a wide range of topical issues. To get you started I recommend the videos on Positive Parenting. Dr. Michael Carr Gregg says.
“There is no such thing as a perfect parent. However, research shows that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult.”
In the “Positive Parenting” section there are interviews with the leading specialists on topics such as:
Can parents help their child build resilience?
- How can parents instill optimism and positivity into their child’s life?
- What is the most effect discipline when dealing with teenagers?
- How important are family rituals and traditions for children?
The “School Survival” series can be accessed to assist parents to support their daughter’s settle into a new Secondary learning environment. There is helpful advice on the topics listed below:
- What can parents do to help their kids’ transition to a new school?
- How stressful is it to move from Primary to Secondary school?
- What is the greatest predictor of Wellbeing in Year 7?
We are excited to announce the formation of a new Student Leadership Committee – the Sustainability and Environment Committee. The Sustainability and Environment Committee allows students to lead, educate and act on sustainability and environment issues within our school community and the wider world. This committee is an addition to the five existing committees; add further opportunities for student voice.
Elections were held in November 2019 for the five existing committees and houses. Congratulations to the following students who were elected into Leadership Roles:
