Sports Report

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this Term 4, Week 2 issue of 'The Crier'.
What an amazing start we have had for the term with our superstar athletes surpassing expectations unbelievably, both in school based competition and in extra curricular participation.
At the end of last term, we had a number of students and staff involved in Grand Finals of local competitions and end of season award ceremonies, where a number of them were successful. The Cobram Tigers Football Netball Club had their U17 football side make it to the granny where they were successful in claiming the title. Miles Curtin, Jedd Opray, River Loizou, Oscar Mackay (Year 11) and James Curtin (Year 10) all played a part in this team during the year and in the finale! The Strathmerton A Grade team also got the chocolates in their grade of the Picola and District Football Netball League, where Miss Vanessa Ward (school receptionist) was a huge contributor to this happening!!! On top of her playing a major part in toppling Picola in the decider, she also took out the club's best and fairest award for this team/grade and then on to win the Nathalia Football Club Women's Best and Fairest award as well!!! Last but not least, Mackenzie O'Dwyer (Year 6) returned from the School Sports Australia 12 and Under Netball Championships in Canberra with a BRONZE MEDAL! Mackenzie acquitted herself exceptionally and was a key player in the Victorian team's success, especially considering they were the best team in the competition over the 2nd round!
As soon as we returned from holidays, there has been no reprieve, diving straight into the next levels of athletics. Seven Year 7-10 students ventured over to Albury last Thursday, 10th October, to participate in the Hume Region Secondary Athletics Championships and did extremely well! Isaac Crawford (Year 8) crossed the line in 1ST PLACE IN THE 14 BOYS' 400M EVENT, WHICH SEES HIM IN MELBOURNE TODAY (18/10) CONTESTING THE STATE FINAL!!! He also gained a silver in the 800m and a bronze in the 1500m. Bailey Mason (Year 10) finished in 2nd place in the 16 Boys' Triple Jump and the 14 Girls' 4 x 100m relay team, consisting of Madison McDiarmid (Y7 and underage), Ava Vodusek (Y7 and underage), Belle Dunn and Erin Scanlon ran their hearts out to finish 3rd. On Monday, 14th October, 31 Year 3-6 students represented Cobram AGS at the 2019 Goulburn-Murray Division Athletics Championships in Shepparton and what they achieved was sensational. From this event, 15 students qualified for the Hume Regionals, which are being held in Albury today, 18th October. We have 10 students representing the school in individual events, where Sarah Stone (Year 5), Charlie Fox (Year 5) and Mackenzie O'Dwyer (Year 6) are representing in both of their favoured two events, 7 others in one individual event and 3 relay teams!!! The combined efforts of both our Primary and Secondary athlete squads sees this easily the best ever performed group in the history of our school, in both our Christ the King and Cobram Anglican Grammar School statuses!!! Thanks to all the parents, family members and Ms. Bagu, who all came along to support and assist the squad to perform at this high level! We wish them all the very best and hope to report on more success following today's event!
And if you thought that was enough, wait...….there's more!!! Yesterday, Thursday 17th October, the Year 7 and 8's participated in the GMDSSV Interschool Summer Sports day, where they participated in Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis and Cricket. One of our Year 8 Girls' teams ended up coming runners-up on the day, whilst the CAGS A cricket team only had the one loss for the day (by 2 runs) to finish in 5th spot. Being part of the cricket supervision, it was also terrific to see the encouragement and support the B team gave each other. They may have been light on for wins on the day but had the biggest win of all by giving their best and encouraging their team-mates to do the same! Well done!
As you can see, a very successful end to term and an extremely busy start to the new one!!! Great to be a part of some very special achievements and giving our students every opportunity to excel in the sporting offerings we are able to provide!!! Congratulations to one and all! So proud of what has been accomplished! Go Team CAGS!!!
Until next time, God bless and take care.
