Week 5 Assembly Messages

At this week’s Assembly, Mrs. Milich spoke about making good behaviour choices and linking this to the notion of a remote control. She spoke to the students about always having the option of pausing our thoughts and actions, a little like a PlayStation or Foxtel remote. To end the Assembly, we looked at an ABC story and linked this to the College value of gratitude. At Port Fairy's East Beach, even in the bitterly cold months of winter, it's a normal sight to see a group of people in nothing but bathing suits, submerging a man right into the ocean in a wheelchair. The scene is generally accompanied by laughter and the unchecked roar that only the cold whack of the ocean can extract from a person. The man in the chair is Jim Pevitt and he is being helped into the ocean for his daily ritual. It is a ritual known to all inhabitants of beach towns around Australia -the early morning ocean dip. Jim has MS, and the morning dip is the high point of his day, even in the freezing winter water. The story is well worth watching.

Pi to 100 Digits

As part of our upper primary Mathematics Olympiad program, students were offered the opportunity to take part in a ‘Pi Competition’. Year Six student Marianna Novikov was the winner. Marianna correctly recited the first 100 digits of Pi. Well done Marianna on a tremendous achievement.

Morning Drop Offs

Parents are reminded that Junior School students must be booked into the Before School Care program if they are on site before 8.30am. Students are being dropped off to an unsupervised playground, as early as 8.15am. There are places available in the Before School Care program, where students can be supervised and then brought over to the Junior School at 8.30am. Your cooperation is appreciated.

P.E. and Sport Uniforms

Junior School students are required to be wearing the correct P.E. and House Sports uniforms on days their class has Mrs. Patterson for P.E. and on Fridays for House Sports/Kiddo Sports. A number of students are wearing old maroon sports jackets that are no longer the prescribed College uniform and were phased out years ago. These jackets can be worn for after school sports trainings, but should not be worn to school. The uniform shop has a healthy stock of the current spray jackets. There are two options available for Junior School students.

Country Week Hockey

Last weekend saw representative teams from around Victoria descend on Melbourne for the annual Country Week Hockey Championships. The Junior School had participants in the under 13 Girls’ and under 13 Boys’ competitions at Essendon Fields. The under 13 Boys’ team performed very well against older and stronger opposition teams. The boys finished a gallant 4th. The under 13 Girls’ team were crowned Victorian Country Champions with a 3-0 win over Albury/Wodonga in the Grand Final. Throughout the weekend, the girls did not lose a match. It was a tremendous result. Country Week Hockey is a great opportunity for girls and boys from multiple clubs within the Glenelg Regional competitions to join together and play at a higher level.

National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday, our Early Learning Centre Piccolo and Junior School students met in Mrs Milich’s Year 3 classroom at 11.00am to join 1.8 million students for the National Simultaneous Storytime. The 2021 text shared was ‘Give Me Some Space!’ by Philip Bunting. Normally the author live streams the story to schools and early learning centres across Australia and New Zealand. This year, ‘Give Me Some Space!’ was read from the International Space Station by N.A.S.A. astronaut Dr. Shannon Walker.
