Art

Foundation students are using oil pastels to colour a sleeve template helping them identify types of shapes and lines. They then create a relief print and a sponge print using primary colours and learn about the term, abstract. They finish the term making a colourful rainbow fish with texta and collage.

Level 1 begin with a very colourful torn-paper portrait and a flower collage in opposite complementary colours. They then create a very hungry caterpillar with balloons and look at autumn tones to create a decorative leaf.

Level 2 Begin the term with a “vegetable head” collage inspired by Italian painter, Giuseppi Arcimboldo. They create critters using a paint scraping technique similar to Eric Carle’s illustrations and finish by creating a beautiful butterfly based on concentric circles.

Level 3&4 begin by making a bright Pop Art Poster. They create dots by rolling over bubble wrap and the poster will include a word about resilience. They then paint a colour wheel which becomes an umbrella. We then begin our sea craft and 3D beach huts to create a big beach scene.

Level 5 begin the term by bringing the Mona Lisa in to the 21st Century. With printed copies of the painting, magazine pictures & paint, students have so far been very clever & creative. Students then observe the idea of perspective to create an illusion tunnel with a photo of themselves in the centre.

Level 6 start the term by creating and painting a personalised registration plate that reflects their personality. They focus on font, design elements and the use of motifs in art. We then try our hand at weaving to create a dreamcatcher.

Music

This term the Foundation to Level 2 students will be introduced to a range or instruments to explore pitch, melody and rhythm. They will solidify their knowledge of high and low sounds and will start to compose their own rhythms and melodies on a tuned or percussion instrument of their choice. The Level 1 and 2 students will also be performing a  song at assembly, using props created by the students themselves, to celebrate their inquiry topics from Term 2.

All of the Level 3-6 students have been preparing their songs and dances for the upcoming Production of ‘The Royal Oddball’ and this term we will be bringing it all together with full runs throughs including costume and props! The students are so very excited to perform the show on August 10th (last name A-L) and 11th (last name M-Z) with the Level 6 students performing on both nights.

Following the production, the students will be focusing on learning tuned instruments such as ukuleles and keyboards to compose and perform their own piece of music. We are looking forward to hearing the amazing compositions that the students’ write and sharing these with their class.

PE (Physical Education)

PE is a major part of learning at HEPS with a focus on developing the gross and fine motor skills along with locomotion. These fundamental skills and movement patterns are learned through a variety of different games and skill specific lessons to ensure all participant are engaged and enjoying their time during PE. If it so happens that we have inclement weather and the gym is occupied the students will be completing theory based Physical Education work within their classrooms.

Term 3 sees the focus for the Foundation and Level 1 students on continuing to developing their Fundamental Motor Skills and Movement Patterns as well as a focus on athletic events. These skills are developed through a variety of sequential activities and movements with a focus on achieving your personal best.

The Level 2 students are focusing on continuing to develop their Fundamental Motor Skills and Movement Patterns through a variety of skills through completing a Physical Literacy Obstacle Course. These skills are progressed through a variety of activities with attention to keeping control and balance in a variety of different settings. They will also be focusing on the athletic skills required for the school athletics day.

Term 3 has the Level 3 and 4 students working on an Invasion Style Games Unit. Throughout this unit there will be a major emphasis on the skills of basketball where we will put these skills into a competitive format leading up to Hoop Time. This unit is a great way to blend skills from a variety of sports into one unit of work. We also have emphasis on athletics as we will hold a hole school event later in the term.

STEAM

STEAM is an integrated subject area that brings together many streams of cognitive human endeavour. It is an acronym pulled from Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. While many of these elements have been taught individually in the past, it is now clear that our contemporary society compels students to be linking these areas cohesively together to cope in a future requiring them to be immersed in a highly technological environment in order to effectively communicate, create and be productive.

The HEPS STEAM program in Term 3 will endeavour to stimulate students in a number of key areas

Term 3 sees the Levels F to 2 complete STEAM engineering projects with a focus on Civil (construction) and Mechanical (gears/wheels and robotics for level 2). Initially, students learn to collaboratively create, plan, construct and test models and inventions using conventional materials to solve physical scientific problems posed to them (expressly non-digital). Next the students will use LEGO Duplo(non-digital)/Simple Machines (non-digital)/WeDo(robotic-digital) constructions to solve and explore mechanical concepts.
