Level 5

Welcome to term 3!

Reading

In Level 5 we are continuing to utilise Reader’s Workshop and build on our skills as independent and collaborative readers. Students engage in authentic reading experiences whether individual, in partners, a small group and as a class. Workshops vary in length and encompass teaching, selecting and reading a good fit book, recording and sharing our thoughts about a given text.

In Term Three, students will be building on their ability to synthesise, where they bring their background knowledge (schema) and evolving understanding of a book to form a deeper meaning of the text. In doing so, students will learn to make connections, form inferences and analyse information in a text by breaking down ideas and learning to become critical thinkers.

Weekly Focus

Week 1 - 2: Synthesising

Week 3 - 4: Synthesising

Week 5 - 6: Synthesising

Week 7 - 8: Analysing

Week 9 - Analysing

Writing

Term Three’s writing genre focus will be information reports. This term our writing unit will be taught in conjunction with our inquiry topic ‘Natural Disasters’. At the beginning of the unit, we will be exploring different types of reports, the ways information can be presented and the structure of an information report. We will be supporting students to think of different ways information can be presented to an audience such as a written report, poster, brochure or news segment. Students will then be encouraged to explore their paragraph and sentence structure while also extending themselves to use scientific word choice to further enhance their writing.

Spelling & Grammar

We will continue to use the school-wide Jolly Phonics program by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. We will provide continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in the previous terms and continue learning about new sounds. In grammar, we will be learning about Prepositional Phrases, Noun Phrases as Subjects                                                     and Objects and Phrasal Verbs.

Inquiry

This term for Inquiry, our focus will be on ‘Natural Disasters’. At the end of Term 2, we asked our students for their input, and they gave us some great ideas about what they would like to know and learn more about, as well as some ‘I wonder’ questions to explore throughout the term.

Our overarching question will be ‘What are the causes and effects of natural disasters?’. Students will take ownership of their learning by choosing natural disasters of personal interest to explore and research.

For their final project, students will select a key natural disaster and event to research, write an information report

and create a presentation in the form of either an oral

presentation, PowerPoint or iMovie.
