Literacy
Reading
This term in Reading, Level 3/4 students are learning about a variety of reading comprehension strategies. These will include ‘summarising’, ‘synthesising’, ‘compare and contrast’ and ‘identifying cause and effect’.
Weekly focus:
Weeks 1-3: Summarising fiction and non-fiction texts
Week 4-6: Identifying cause and effect
Weeks 7-9 : Compare and contrast
Weeks 10: Synthesising
Writing
Throughout Term 3, students will be focusing on informative writing. They will develop skills in recognising the structure and features of information reports. Students will be focusing on the writing traits of voice and ideas, as well as researching information, using topic specific words and writing for an audience to enhance their information reports.
Weekly focus:
Weeks 1-3: Introducing the purpose and features of information reports,
Exposure to student work examples,
Modelling Structure: Introduction and body paragraphs.
Week 4-6: Researching, note taking, subtopics
Weeks 7-9: Word Choice - topic specific words,
Structure - conclusion
Week 10 - Writing and sharing information report
Spelling and Grammar
We will continue to use the school wide Jolly Phonics program which gives students five essential skills for reading and writing: Learning the letter sounds, Learning letter formation, Blending, Identifying sounds in words, and Tricky words. In grammar we will be learning about nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, homophones and tenses.
Weekly focus:
Week 1: <or> for the /er/ sound as in ‘worm’ and changing verb tenses, including; past, present, future, simple and continuous tense.
Week 2: <ear> for the /er/ sound as in ‘earn’ and homophones, including; ‘its’ and ‘it’s’.
Weeks 3: <u> for the long /oo/ sound and plural subjects and verbs.
Week 4: <gh>, <ough> and <augh> sounds and comparatives and superlatives: ‘good’, ‘better’, ‘best, and ‘bad’, ‘worse’ and ‘worst’.
Week 5:<ive> for /iv/ and homophone mix ups: ‘two’, ‘to’ and ‘too’.
Week 6: <-ic> sound and homophone mix up: ‘where’, ‘wear’ and ‘were’.
Week 7: <st> for the /s/ sound and suffixes <-al>.
Week 8: Silent letter digraphs and plural possessive nouns.
Week 9: <-ically> sound and root words, prefixes and suffixes.
Week 10: Schwa <al> sound and grammatical person, such as personal pronouns and ‘first’, ‘second’ and ‘third’ person.
Maths
This Term our number focus is multiplication and division. We will be focusing on strategies such as repeated addition and factors, dividing and equal groups. Students will also explore the connection between multiplication and division and will problem solve demonstrating the understanding of the most effective mental and written strategies.
Through the Measurement and Geometry curriculum we will be developing our understanding of Area and Perimeter as well as Mapping and Location. Students will discover the similarities and differences while using informal and formal units of measurement, problem solving and developing mathematical skills. Students will build skills to recognise the features of maps and their grid references.

Weeks 1-2: Chance / Probability
Weeks 3-4: Multiplication

Inquiry - Life and Living: Life Cycles
In Inquiry this term, Level 3/4 are learning about Science. Students will be using inquiry skills and graphic organisers to explore how to classify things based on observational features and how they can be distinguished from non-living things. They will understand that different living things have different life cycles and depend on each other and the environment to survive.
These are the level essential questions students will engage in throughout the inquiry unit:
- What are living things?
- What makes a living thing, living?
- What are life cycles? Why do living things have life cycles?
