Welcome to Term 3
Literacy
Reading: This term we will be strengthening our understanding of comprehension
strategies such as summarising and making connections between texts and our personal experiences. There is a strong focus on encouraging students to read independently and aloud. We recommend parents ask questions when reading to gauge comprehension including; character, sequence, predicting, main ideas and personal connection to the text.
Questions you could ask you child while reading:
- Is there something similar between this book and another you have read before? Eg. characters, settings/storylines
- What clues in the story help you make a prediction about the story?
- Is there a hidden meaning in the story? What clues did you use?
- What reading strategy can be used to work out the tricky word?
- What information does this picture give you?
- How is the character feeling? How do you know?

Writing: This term we will be working on developing our understanding of imaginative
writing. Students will be learning how to develop characters and settings as well as improving sentences to ensure our writing is both interesting and entertaining for our audience. We will also have a strong focus on procedural writing to coincide with our Design and Tech unit of Food Glorious Food.
Questions you could ask your kids while reading:
- What text type is this book?
- What is the purpose of the punctuation?
- Can you sum up the story in 1-2 sentences?
- What is the meaning of the story?

Spelling: This term we will continue to follow the Jolly Phonics Spelling and Grammar Program. We have had a strong focus on the long vowel sounds and will continue to do so throughout Term 3. We will continue looking into nouns, verbs and adjectives and will begin looking at verbs in the past, present and future tense.

Maths
In maths this term we will be exploring subtraction through a rich, hands on approach. We will focus on a range of skills used to solve subtraction problems such as counting backwards with numbers beyond 20, the difference between, backwards tens facts, skip strategy and problem solving.
We will further explore Time to the half hour using both analogue and digital clock
displays.
We will be introducing students to multiplication through the skills of repeated addition, equal groups of and skip counting. We encourage all parents to continue to strengthen their child's confidence during everyday activities.
Questions you could ask you children:
- What time is it now?
- How long until we have to leave?
- What day is it tomorrow?
- What number can you count up to by 2s, 5s, 10s in one minute?

- learn about foods from different cultures and Bush Tucker.
- do some cooking and look at special foods we eat for times of celebration.
