A recap on the New Shiny eBooks and Audio books!

In the last Library news I spoke about the new service where you and your daughter(s) can access over 2,500 eBooks and Audio books to read and listen to from your phone or iPad.  We can give you a progress report on the first month’s usage: 187 loans comprising 107 eBooks and 80 audio books.  This is a great start and we hope that with the holidays (and potential long car trips) that these figures will increase!

We have also bought a number of eBooks for this platform which have been requested by staff and students; we can’t get everything as we are limited (if having access to nearly 508,000 is ‘limited’) by the titles which our supplier has negotiated digital rights.  There are instances where this has not happened, even though the title may be available for personal purchase through Amazon or a similar company.

If you missed the last article, you can find links to this service from Simon AND from the “eBooks & Audio books” Libguide. Alternatively you can go to this site: https://kilbreda.wheelers.co/  and download the app. Once you have downloaded the app just select the library (Kilbreda of course!) from the options and log in using your normal school ID password.  You only have to do this once.

Professional Development Collection Database

This will not be of much interest to your daughters however if you happen to be involved in the education professions you might want to have a look.  This database allows our teachers to search on 500+ of the best education journals in the world. They can also set up alerts to subjects and authors or when new editions of a journal comes out.  Professional reading counts towards staff’s ongoing accreditation and this service will ensure that Kilbreda’s teachers have ready access to the goings-on and best practice around the world.

Dramatic News Just In!

We have subscribed to a fantastic new service for our Drama, Dance and English students.  Digital Theatre (D.T.) are a company based in the U.K. who provide access to films and behind-the-scenes interviews of 400+ plays.  The Royal Shakespeare Co. and the Australian National Theatre are just two of the troupes whose performances and thoughts are accessible through this subscription.  Teachers and students also gain access to work sheets and lesson plans – a very exciting addition for our Performing Arts and English resources.  Plays studied at Kilbreda include Romeo and Juliet, A Doll’s House, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Crucible, Buried Child and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.  Go to the Kilbreda Libguides pages mentioned above and use the super-secret login and password for admittance!

Lost Property

We recover and wash 100+ food containers and drink flasks each term.  Many of these are quite fancy and likely to be quite expensive.  We put them on display at the exit to the library but very few are collected by their owners.  Your daughter may groan if you put her name on these items but you will be happy when we contact her to come and collect them!
