Student Voice

SLC Writing and SRC Representative

As part of all our future Newsletters and in line with our School Improvement Plan, we are aiming to include items from our Student Leaders to ensure their voice is represented. These may include a sample of their creative writing or a writing piece of their personal views about a topical theme as well as something from one of the members of our Student Representative Council (SRC).

Please enjoy the following piece of writing from one of our senior students and another piece from one of the members of our Student Representative Council (SRC).

Lights Out! By Kiera

“5 minutes until lights,” said Ms. Pearce, the kind orphanage lady announced. I was new at this place, looking for a bed or a pillow or at least a blanket to sleep on. “Oh, and Annalise,” she whispered to me, “go and introduce yourself to a few of the girls. They do need to have some new friends after, well, most of them left.” What does she mean by most of them left?  Hmm, maybe I should introduce myself to them, I thought. I took a breath and sucked up enough courage to walk over and talk, but then - “Lights out!” Oh great I thought, I don’t have a bed or a friend to lend me a - “Pillow?” a girl asked, “Oh sorry, I forgot to introduce myself,” she continued, “I’m E-e, umm sorry, I can’t really remember my name I think it's...El- Ella, no. El-el, Elouise? Yeah Elouise!” she exclaimed. Why didn’t she remember her name? Why were so many girls not here when it said they took care of loads of them? And why, why is this random girl offering me a pillow? I thought to myself, but I took it anyway. “Tha-thanks, I-I’m Ann-Anna-A,” I couldn’t speak, as usual. “Annalise,” I said thankfully knowing I did it while taking a breath.

“Stuttering problem? Yes? No? Or are you just nervous, well anyway I would like you to know that I’ve seen the pirates take the girls before so I suggest you -” She stopped as a tight rope wrapped around her mouth.

SRC is a Student Representative Council made up of students from every classroom. I like being a part of the SRC because along with a fancy badge, you get to help kids who feel like they don’t have a voice and to make the school a better place.

So far, the SRC has come up with an idea for a Student Voice Box that will allow students to write anonymously about any worries or thoughts they might have. Mr. Brophy our school's Student Wellbeing Leader and the SRCs will be the only ones who will see these. We are hoping to get some great ideas for the future of the school and to tackle any concerns students might have.
