Persuasive Writing - Hot Writes!

In Writing, the grade 3/4 students have been working on persuasive texts.

We have looked at different persuasive techniques, analysed texts and co-constructed texts as a grade.

We focused on:

  • learning to express a point of view about a topic
  • learning to write reasons to support a point of view about a topic
  • learning to use persuasive devices to persuade the reader
  • learning to revisit a Cold Write and make improvements
  • learning to write a Hot Write! (finished persuasive piece), using the knowledge we learnt about persuasive writing.

Initially, the students were given a topic, ‘There should be NO homework’ and were then required to complete a Cold Write, writing on the topic, using only their own ideas and knowledge.  This was completed without any assistance or support.

Once the students had been immersed with the persuasive writing style, it was their turn. The students applied the skills they had learnt and had a go at a ‘Warm Write’, where they made some improvements to their text, self-corrected and edited.

After that they completed a ‘Hot Write!’ This is when they wrote a ‘good’ finished copy of their persuasive piece (including all the edits and changes that they made while working on their Cold Writes).

Lastly, there was an opportunity for self-assessment of their efforts and reflection of their work, before they shared their pieces with their classmates.

Overall, the students did a wonderful job with their finished pieces and should be proud of their efforts!  We have included a few to share with you 😊
