Sports Report

It has been a very busy and successful beginning to the year in sport!

Despite our recent unfortunate lockdown and interruptions to our sporting program we must congratulate and thank all the students who have represented the school in either an individual sport such as GD or ICCES swimming, athletics and cross country and to those also involved in our team sports. I hope you have kept in mind our five positive character strengths/domains to enrich your sporting experience.

  • Commitment – service, communication, teamwork
  • Passion – pride, enjoyment, determination
  • Character – mindset, resilience, initiative
  • Mastery – challenge, achievement, growth
  • Legacy – sportsmanship, role modelling, memories

We are very lucky to have so many dedicated coaches and team mangers as well as other administrators/volunteers in our sporting program which is essential to its success. Many of these people are staff, students, parents and other friends of the College who give up their time to see the students learn, enjoy and develop life skills through their sporting pursuits.

Have a relaxing holiday break with your families and we hope that when we return all of our regular weekly sport will resume and dates for the postponed opportunities such as the ICCES Winter Tour and Year 9/10 Boys Football will be announced as well as the scheduled events for Term 3.

Men's Hockey

Our game scheduled for next Sunday was played on Monday of this week.  We were very grateful to the Couldabeens for agreeing to play the match early and for giving us a tough match.

The boys have shown some real development and, prior to the lockdown, had played two very competitive games against the two top teams, Rams and Bulls, although we had lost both matches.  On Monday we sought to have the same spirit in our game and an early goal started us off well.  We dropped in intensity for the last ten minutes of the half and suffered accordingly, conceding an equalising goal.  The second half was more rewarding with three unanswered goals seeing us home to a 4-1 result.  We were kept honest, though, and it was only in the final ten minutes or so that we broke the shackles and began to find team-mates within the circle.

Eren Zehir (who scored a hat-trick), our Captain Ferg Roberts (who scored the opening goal), Clancy Munro in defence, Charley Falla-Jones with lots of run and Euan Sutherland, consistent and reliable on the half-line, stood out as our better players but I have been very pleased with the way all members of the team are contributing … and Gabe Marshall is proving agile and alert in goals.

We hope we can enjoy an uninterrupted run next term and a continuation of the progress we have made.
