Transition and Pathways

National Careers Week 17 - 23 May

National Careers Week is an initiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia and aims to celebrate careers, career development, career development services, and career development practitioners and to promote the economic, social and personal benefits of career development.

Career development is a process of managing learning, work and leisure to progress through life. It includes gaining and using the skills and knowledge needed to plan and make informed decisions about education, training, and work. Everyday decisions and priorities affect career development. Ultimately, career development is about much more than jobs – it is about how to live your life.

Mater Dei students will be provided with a number of opportunities next week to get involved in career development.

Eyes Wide Open Health Careers Information Evening

Are you interested in a career in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, paramedics or allied health?

Eyes Wide Open is an information evening aiming to provide local Riverina high school students with the opportunity to learn about potential future professions in medicine, nursing, and allied health.

A number of health professionals, including nurses, paramedics, speech pathologists, physios etc. will shed light on what their current day-to-day job involves and their career paths. Those who attend will also get a chance to ask questions to some UNSW Medical Students following the presentations from our guest speakers.

The UNSW medical students attending the night have come from a wide range of backgrounds and some have gone through different pathways to get into medicine (e.g. having experience in other clinical areas such as nursing/ midwifery who have since proceeded to study medicine), giving another perspective for school students to consider. You will find that some of these students are also from the local region of the Riverina.

When: 5:30pm 23 June 2021

Where: Kildare Catholic College Hall

This event is open to Year 10 - 12 students and parents /carers.

Please let Mr O’Connell know asap if you are interested in attending this event.

Universities using Year 11 results for entry

Students should be aware of the increasing number of universities that are using your Year 11 results for entry to university through early offer programs.

The following universities are currently making unconditional offers in August of your final year of school based on Year 11 results and a 'personal statement'.

  • Charles Sturt University
  • Australian National University
  • University of Canberra
  • University of Wollongong

Many universities in NSW and the ACT also use School Recommendation Schemes (SRS) as a pathway to university. These universities use a recommendation from your school (at the end of Year 12) together with your Year 11 results for entry. A full list of universities currently using this scheme can be found here.

These universities generally make an offer after you sit HSC exams.

Students may not be eligible for all courses through these programs and are still able to get in to university based on their ATAR, however, there is an increasing reliance on your Year 11 results as an indicator of success. Many courses also have additional requirements such as portfolios, exams, interviews and written applications.

When you are in Year 12 you will be kept informed of opening and closing dates and I also hold information sessions on how to apply.

Please come and see me if you have any questions about these programs.
