WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

Year 7

Inter School Netball

Well done to our Year 7 Netball teams. Both teams "flourished" and proudly represented the College. Our great day consisted of some nail-biter games, however, the teams "united" to have some fantastic wins. In particular, our B-Grade team beat Grovedale College in the Grand final and are on their way to the next level. Shout out to Year 11 student Georgia N for coaching on the day and being a positive role model to our younger students, as well as Amber D who showed fantastic leadership on and off the field. Well done Surf Coast!

Lewis B Makes State Team

Lewis has been selected as one of 23 players in the Melbourne Rebels U13 State Team to play at the national championships in Canberra in July!

Lewis attended the trials last week and was lucky enough to be selected in the team, along with another of his Geelong Rams Rugby Club team mates, Rogotane Povey.

Lewis' parents couldn't be happier, saying "We are so proud of Lewis for all his hard work, training and commitment to the sport that he has loved since he began playing in Dubai 10 years ago. He has a passion for rugby and has set himself the goal of playing professionally. We are so proud that he is taking his first steps towards this goal and support him fully in achieving his dream."

Fantastic effort Lewis!

WMR Cross Country

On Monday the 24th of May, 36 students represented SCSC in the Geelong Cross Country Championship. All students ran very solid and represented themselves and their college with pride in their three or five kilometre races around Eastern Gardens in Geelong, with 33 students progressing to the Western Metro Region round on Thursday the 17th of June. We received four team pennants for the 12 Boys, 14 Girls, 15 Boys and Senior Boys. We also had some outstanding individual efforts, with Sienna McC (Year 8), Finlay M (Year 7) and Ada B (Year 8) all winning their event, Asabi C (Year 9) placing 2nd, and Scarlett M (Year 8) placing 3rd.

Year 9

During terms one and two, our year 9 Journalism students have been involved in understanding the processes behind the media. Our Year 9 students have been analysing the motives behind the media, the tools in which they employ to persuade and influence their audience and which news outlets can actually be trusted.

Below is a summary from Archie, Tessa and Chloe about their experiences in Journalism in Semester one.

“Throughout this semester in Journalism we have been breaking down and analysing news articles as well as creating our own news reports and shows. Journalism is a good subject if you want to work socially as most tasks and assignments are done in small group settings.  Journalism is a good opportunity to see the news and read and perform analysis of current affairs, these lessons help you later in life as it teaches you to differentiate between real news and fake or bias news articles, it gives you the ability to help you on what news and media you consume”.

And a submission from another Yr. 9 student, Ashlee F: "During this semester of journalism we have learnt about real and fake news, bias, the types and formats of news and how these affect the way the media is presented and how we perceive it. We have created our own news pieces and analysed news articles to extensively breakdown the factors that build what we are examining. Journalism teaches us how we are constantly consuming media throughout our everyday lives and being influenced by it. The media helps form our opinions and thoughts so it is important to be able to understand if the information given is credible and not altered from preconceptions by the creator."

Years 9 & 10

Be Wise Incursion

In Week 6, the Year 9 and 10 students participated in a community incursion hosted by Ben from the Pat Cronin Foundation. Ben, a local from Geelong, shared the personal story of Pat and his own experience as a victim of a coward punch while out socialising a few years ago. The aim of the session was to encourage students to develop perspective and provide an optimistic voice to awareness, education and research about the Coward Punch, helping our students feel empowered to make change through wise decisions.

The Be Wise program was developed in consultation with teachers, psychologists, researchers, students, and parents to bring a whole of school/community approach to learning important wellbeing lessons. The Be Wise session covered Pat’s story, strategies for violence prevention, and the consequences of violence.

Although the topic was at times sombre, both cohorts of students engaged in the session respectfully, asked insightful questions and explored the concept of coward punches on a personal and societal level, walking away from the session with some new information and perspective.
