Year 3 Education Week Activities

From Jaimi, Year 6 teacher

Mini Archaeologists under local history

In our history unit, we have been exploring the local past and understanding what life was like for Wurundjeri people pre and post European settlement. We have become mini archaeologists, exploring the ground under the oval, and discovering some amazing artifacts to help us understand what life was like at North Melbourne Primary School!

Cities

We are so proud of our Year 3's for finishing NAPLAN in week 4. We have been busy working on our multiplication and division strategies in the classroom, and have created some impressive array cities to show our understanding!

Chemistry

As part of Education Week, we invited one of our parents, Guy Jameson, to teach students about chemistry! Year 3's learned about how many atoms are in a single gram of salt (hint- it's a HUGE number), and then they created chemical art by painting with magnesium sulfate.

We have also become experts in bush foods; sampling, drawing, labelling and smelling the delicious aromas of Lemon Myrtle, Strawberry Gum, Cut Leaf Mint, River Mint, Macadamia Nuts, Warrigal Greens, and Vanilla Lily.

Students loved sampling the flavours and distinguishing the features of local bush foods, and their culinary and medicinal uses.
