Year 1 Reconciliation Week

From Kristen, Year 1 teacher
Year 1 learnt about the importance of National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day which falls on Wednesday 26 May.
We discussed the North Melbourne Primary School Acknowledgement of Country, which we hear at each school assembly. We discussed why it is important to acknowledge the rightful owners of the land. We brainstormed how can we as a class show respect, appreciation and a willingness to learn more. We asked,
What can we do to care for Country at our school?
We decided to create our own class Acknowledgement of Country. To show our gratitude to the traditional owners, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, for their love and care of the land we learn on. We painted native gum leaves with the colours of the Indigenous flag to signify our respect, thanks, acknowledgement and promise to care for the shared land on which we learn.
