Transition to School
For the families enrolled in Oak Flats Public School Preschool we want to remind you that later this term the enrolment forms will be available for Kindergarten enrolment for 2024. We also want to share with you in this preschool report, the focus we have on transition to school. The children at preschool are practising many skills that will support their transition to Kindergarten in 2024. These skills include:
- taking care of their belongings
- making friends and playing cooperatively
- saying goodbye to family
- managing their feelings when a situation is difficult
- understanding and listening to expectations
- following the routine
- listening to stories and interacting with books
- refining their ability to write their name
- cutting through paper
- playing group games
- creating their own artworks and building structures
- engaging in project learning that challenges and connects their thinking
The children appear to have a sense of connection to Oak Flats Public School when we walk through the school on our way to an event or the library. The children often point out where the office, the canteen or Gurrungutch is, and this familiarity helps to provide the children with confidence that they are a student at our school.
It has been noticed over our years of educating young children that many family members become worried that they should be doing more for their child's preparation for school. Please know that you are already doing so much to support your child with this next step. There are times when the community focus on the concept of bringing primary education down to preschool however it is proven in research that play-based education is the best way to support a child aged 3-5. Starting school is an exciting milestone for your child and family. All of you will be experiencing changes as your child settles into a new learning environment, develops new friendships, and spends time with new teachers. Preparing your child for their transition to school prepares them for future learning and development. |
The preschool team are looking forward to continuing to support the children to further develop and extend their skills during Semester 2.
