Carnivals & Interschool Sport and House news
Term 3 has finished with a full schedule of interschool sports on our calendar. Please find set out below a few important reminders for Interschool Sport:
- Check Compass regularly for information about team sign-ups.
- Please ensure payment and consent is provided by the due date. Students are unable to attend the event if we do not have this.
- If students decide to pull out of the event before the day, they MUST let either the teacher coaching the team OR Miss Prosenak know ASAP so that we can find another student as a replacement. If not, the team may not have enough players and be unable to go.

Senior Boys Basketball team win the Champions Cup
Congratulations to the senior boys basketball team! After winning the Champions Cup they are now through to the Elite 8 competition. These students have been playing together since Year 7. They have become a tight knit group who play very well together on court, and understand each other's game having played so much together.
We are very proud of the team, being the only non private or non sports school to make it to the Elite 8 competition.

Year 8 student Rosie Farr enjoys aerobic success
Rosie Farr (7B) and her team 'The Black Pearl' recently competed in the National Aerobics competition. Four of the six members of this team are Year 8 or younger. Most of the other 8 teams from around Australia had mainly senior secondary students only, in their team, making ours the youngest.
The girls performed very well, bringing their ‘A game’ and won a bronze medal - the highest ranking of all Victorian teams and 3rd in the country.
Well done to Rosie and her teammates!
Northern Star Chess Tournament: A mighty day for Koonung!
A big congratulations to the Koonung Secondary College Chess Team who had a fantastic result at the Northern Star Interzonal Chess Tournament held at Kingswood College on August 29th.
Koonung blew away all event organiser and opposition expectations, finishing an amazing 2nd overall in the School Competition – a score tallied from the totals of the top-4 ranked players from each school. With over 100 competitors, this was a fantastic achievement. Mazenod took 1st place and continued their long dominance in school chess.
Koonung had some brilliant individual results, winning 5 individual medals:
- James Lonnen (Year 12) finished with 6/7, and won the Gold Medal for Years 11-12
- Jonas Wong (Year 12) finished with 5/7 and won Bronze Medal for Years 11-12
- Ben Harding (Year 12) finished with 5/7 and won Bronze Medal for Years 11-12
- Darren Tsai (Year 7) finished with 5/7, and won Bronze Medal for Years 7-8
- Molly Doyle (Year 10) finished with 2/7 and won Silver Medal in the Open Girls
A number of KSC students also qualified for entry to the upcoming Secondary State Finals in October:
- James Lonnen
- Jonas Wong
- Ben Harding
- Darren Tsai
- Josiah Ng
- Stefan Lee
- Molly Doyle
Chess is thriving at Koonung, and I encourage any interested players to head to Room 28 at Friday lunchtimes for Chess Club. This is a great way to meet students from different year levels, and get some great chess in. Before long, I see no reason why Koonung cannot become a chess powerhouse!
Well done to all eighteen Koonung students who represented the school so well, and a special mention to our departing Year 12s who represented Koonung so well across their secondary schooling.
Well done to all students who attended: Ben Harding, Francis Healey, James and Ashton Lonnen, Dhruv Mehta, Ronak Sen, Jonas Wong, Radin Pakniatjahromi, James Panchmatia, Jason Thi, Molly Doyle, David Aumann, Josiah Ng, Stefan Lee, Jareth Ho, and Darren Tsai.
