Term 3, Week 2 - Friday 4th August, 2023

Good afternoon OLSC families

It's hard to believe that we are almost half way through the term already.  Have a great weekend everyone and hopefully enjoy the sunshine.

First Eucharist Masses

On Monday and Wednesday last week about 40 of our Year 4 and 5 students celebrated the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time.  Both masses were beautiful and prayerful celebrations of this catholic milestone for our students.  I thank all of the families that came along and supported the students.  I'd also like to thank our staff for attending one or both of these masses and being part of the preparation of this sacrament for the OLSC students.  Congratulations to John for organising the events and for his work on the faith formation of our students.

Prep 100 Days Celebration

Yesterday our Prep students celebrated 100 days of school.  I am sure that all 72 of them would have slept very well last night (and their teachers).  Thanks to the staff for organising this special day which was topped off with a jumping castle!  if you look closely at the photos below you might see a couple of staff enjoying the jumping castle (even Dasanthi and Bianca right up the back).

School Closure Day

On Monday 14th August, we will have a school closure day.  The staff will be a part of professional learning with a focus on effective learning and teaching in both Mathematics and Literacy.  The day will be facilitated by staff from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) curriculum teams.

OLSC Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will arrive at school during Book Week (21st to 25th August). This afternoon, your child brought home a flyer about the Book Fair and you might see some posters around the school advertising this event. Students will be completing a wish list once the books arrive at school, you can use the form on the back of the flyer to place an online order if you are unable to come in and view the books in person.

Terri Campbell's Term 3 visit

This week, our friend Terri returned to OLSC to work in the Literacy block with some students and teachers from Prep to Year 6. On Monday, the students in Shalome's class worked with Terri to read informative texts about animals. They worked with a partner to find words in the text that would make them sound like experts in their writing. They also created labelled diagrams of their animals. Emma's 3/4 students worked together to read some of the Book Week books and then recorded what they were thinking and feeling as they read.

Today, the Prep students in Sam's class read the book 'Monkey and Me' and then had a go at writing their sentences using the words from the text. Finally, the 5/6s in Alexandra's group worked on making persuasive claims about the welfare of animals in zoos. They wrote sentences with a partner thinking about the themes of money, health and morals.

Confirmation Family Workshop -Wed 2nd August

On Wednesday we had a Confirmation family workshop in Learning Centre 2.  This workshop was to assist in the preparation of our Year 6 students for the Sacrament of Confirmation to be celebrated next Friday evening.  The workshop was run by John and the team from Learning Centre 2 and I thank them for their preparation and dedication to the senior students.
