This week, students in Years 5 and 6 participated in an incursion as part of our Term 3 Inquiry unit: Care for the Kids.
In this incursion, we explored experiences of poverty in Australia and learned about inequality and what causes disadvantages in our communities.
We also learned about The Salvation Army’s work to help people experiencing poverty and hardships.
We also learned how we can take action to help others and act compassionately.
We interviewed some students in Years 5 and 6, and this is what they learned and liked about the incursion:
I learnt how the Salvation Army helps homeless people and the community. I also learnt that the Salvos help people that are in need by providing them with long-lasting food and clothes. I believe the Salvation Army is a trusted organization.
I liked how the people organised a fun activity for the 5/6s. I liked the wool because, during that game, we learnt what a community is and how one person's actions can affect others.

I learnt that the salvos help people who can't afford food or clothes. The government pays the Salvos money so that people can receive support and food. The Salvos provide accommodation for people and make sure it is fair for everyone. The Salvos are actually called The Salvation Army, and they help people have a happier day. They provide showers for the poor and also some clothes if they need them. They also try to help people get a job. I liked how they helped people have a happier and more comforting life for free.

I like learning about how one person’s actions can affect a lot of other people. And how in the activity, we had to throw the wool around and how it shows how people are connected like in a community. I also learnt that the Salvos help around 1.76 million people every year with food donations, finding them houses, and lots more.
