Shizuka Ryokan

 Overnight Stay

The Year 12 Japanese class went to Daylesford to visit Shizuka Ryokan. A Ryokan is a traditional inn meant for relaxation. We went to learn more about Japanese culture, specifically the history and significance of these Ryokans. The Ryokan had a beautiful Japanese garden out the front which was wonderful to explore.

Whilst there, the lovely staff gave us a presentation on the history of Ryokans, and the specific one we were staying at. We were provided Karaage (fried chicken) bento boxes, rice and miso soup for lunch. Bento boxes are a single portion take-out of home-made meal. We were then served a five-course meal for dinner of sashimi, tempura, teriyaki chicken, more miso soup and a pudding ice cream combo for dessert. For breakfast we were served grilled salmon, rice, pickled vegetables and left-over miso soup.

Between meals we studied as a class and practiced our Japanese with the Ryokan’s staff. We stayed in traditional Japanese rooms with tatami (bamboo mats) and a low table with chairs, which was moved of a night-time to fit futons. We were given Yukatas in the evening to wear for dinner. They were quite comfortable.

After dinner we returned to our rooms to enjoy a Japanese bath. The Ryokan gave us homemade bath salts to mix in with our baths. It was really relaxing.

Overall, the stay was really nice. The food was delicious, the staff were lovely, and the rooms were comfortable. I returned home feeling relaxed and I am eager to go to the Ryokan again.
