Languages

Bonjour          Ciao         こんにちは

Kilbreda offers three languages. French, one of the most beautiful languages, which sounds like a poem. The cheerful and rhythmical, Italian and a very different and vibrant language, Japanese!

You will explore and learn about a language and culture in any of our Language classes. We work to incorporate exciting cultural activities and experiences through our program.

Many students who complete VCE coursework in a Language keep learning the language in university, travel to the country in which the language is spoken and/or use the language for their career.

We are fortunate here at the College as we have enthusiastic and skilled Language teachers, who are passionate about their subjects.

We teach how learning another language (or languages) and exploring other cultures is fun! Do you know how many languages there are in the world? 200? 3,000? According to Linguistic sources, there are 6,909 distinct languages in the world.  “At least a portion of the Christian bible had been translated into 2,508 different languages as of 2009.”[1]

So, how many languages can you speak? This is a good opportunity to learn and explore another culture and language at the College.  We believe this is enriching for your future study and life and expands your views and widens the world to you. Come and learn another language with our experienced and energetic teachers.

Buongiorno!

My name is Prof Porto, that’s the title every secondary school student (like you) in Italy would use to address their teacher. I am Italian and I landed in Australia 11 years ago from Catania, Sicily.

I love languages and I speak Italian, Spanish and French, as well as little 'bits and bobs' of others. My passion for languages came from a trip I did with my parents in Belgium where we were hosted in the enchanted monastery of Orval. I was 12 years old and a person tried to communicate with me in…French, English, Spanish, he even tried in Latin (he was a priest!) and I couldn’t understand him. Since then I said to myself, "if this person knows four languages and I cannot understand him…I’m missing out!" That’s when it all started!

Thank you for your warm welcome into the Kilbreda College community. I am looking forward to meet you all!
