Loyola House Day
On Thursday 29 July, Loyola House celebrated the significant year of our patron, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. This year commemorates the 500 year anniversary of the ‘cannonball moment’, which ultimately began the establishment of the Society of Jesus. As a House, we reflected upon the bravery of Ignatius, his recklessness, and his ability to relate to his comrades. We look to Ignatius for inspiration, working towards fulfilling our House motto ‘quantum potes, tantum aude’, which encourages us to explore things more deeply, to choose the better option, to act more generously, and to seek the greater good.
We also celebrated what it meant to be a member of Loyola House, a passionate, caring and generous group of people. An important part of our day was the pizza lunch, sharing a meal contributes to stronger relationships and strengthens the bond of a Homeroom and of a House.
A huge thank you to all Loyola House Staff, particularly the Homeroom teachers who play a special role in the lives of our students.

High Achievers' Breakfast
On Thursday morning we celebrated the high achievement of students from Years 7-12, based on Semester One results. It was particularly pleasing that 158 students qualified as high achievers; there are usually around 120 students in the high achievers' group. A wonderful breakfast was served before the guest speaker and past student, Sam Bouffler (Class 2014), addressed the group. Sam spoke fondly of his time at the College. He advised students to strive for success in all subject areas and to balance studies with exercise and social contact.

Year 12 Geography Excursion
On Monday 26 July Year 12 Geography students attended an excursion around Perth examining the city’s internal morphology, urban processes and challenges, particularly urban sprawl (and we were lucky enough to stay dry!). Fieldwork is an important component of the ATAR course and a great learning experience, allowing students to consolidate concepts taught in class and observe real-life examples. Beginning in the CBD, students practised their sketching skills at Elizabeth Quay before visiting Yagan Square, East Perth, Osborne Park and Mindarie Marina. Later in the day, the group witnessed the extent of Perth’s urban sprawl by visiting one of the newer housing estates in the norther corridor, Eden Beach in Jindalee. A Satterley Development Manager for the estate spoke to the students about the characteristics of a 'Liveable Neighbourhood' and the strategies they have in place to develop a sense of community in these new suburbs in Perth. A special thank you to Mr Declan Sharp for accompanying us on the excursion for the day.

Dungeons and Dragons Club
Dungeons & Dragons starts next week with four campaigns being offered.
Genevieve Ferguson Allen is DMing her own creation called The Mystery of Estral. Strange things have been happening in Estral, strange and dangerous things threatening the safety of the people and stability of the Kingdom. In response, the King has put out a call to any in the land who would be willing to put their lives at risk to get solve the issue and find its source, but all is not as it seems...
Jack Harrington is running the Curse of Strahd. The module revolves around the vampire Strahd von Zarovich and the Demiplane of Dread that serves as his prison.
Jordan Smith is DMing for the first time and has created his own campaign – The Dungeons of Mimix. This adventure is a fighting exploration in the realm of Theganville.
Last of all my merry band of Year 7s are continuing with the Lost Mines of Phandelver. The party has entered the stronghold of the Rebrand Ruffians and are looking to track down the evil mage who calls himself Glass Staff.
There are few places left if any student would like to join a campaign. Please see Mr Connellan as soon as possible to be included.

Sustainability Club
HOPE stands for (Help Our Precious Earth) and is the Sustainability Club at John XXIII College. It began in 1995 and its growth into the vibrant environmental club it is today was due to the input and involvement of many key people. Amongst them is past Principal, Mr Greg Clune whose involvement in HOPE’s infant years and tree-planting activities were always a delight and a great source of encouragement.
All our tree-planting activities since 1995 would not have eventuated without the assistance of our College Grounds staff and their Managers, Mr Phil O’Neil (Past Manager) and present Manager, Mr Jim Pearson. To these wonderful people I want to hail and sincerely thank you for your on-going care for the trees and plants at our College and ensure that they are in good health.
I also want to thank and acknowledge the involvement of all HOPE members past and present who have so generously given of their time over countless lunch times to show their love for the environment by planting a tree, cultivating vegetable gardens, participate in paper-recycling activities, water audits, Clean-up Australia/Schools Day and other activities.
Special thanks and acknowledgement go to our foundational core members: Andrew Parker, Marcus Marchant, Leith Woods, Oren Forward, Michelle Fry, Matthew Fry, Miranda Dunn, Toby Gummer and Paul Grandoni whose enthusiasm and creativity kept the spirit of HOPE alive for many years even after they have left College. Many thanks to these students who have returned to the College on World Environmental Day to help plant trees for a number of years.
It would be remiss of me if I did not acknowledge the contribution and support of the following teachers: Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Rod Downie, Ms Jane Donovan and Mrs Debbie Archer who together, gave valuable advice and support for the running of HOPE and its activities especially during the club’s earlier years. Thank you! Thank you!
Last but not least, heart-felt thanks to our Principal, Mr Rob Henderson and Assistant Principal, Mrs Kath Negus. Their leadership, support and commitment to the teachings of ‘Laudato Si’ and the spirituality of St Ignatius have encouraged sustainable practices to flourish at the College.
The clip provides a snapshot of sustainability at John XXIII College and I want to thank Lisa Martella (Marketing & Communications Manager) and Sam Tout (Videographer) for putting it together so succinctly and so brilliantly. Finally, this video clip is shared with you with the richest blessings, gratitude and great hope that we, each of us, will do our bit to care for planet earth, our common home and Our Mother.

Fr Kevin King Cup Athletics Carnival
Our Interhouse Athletics Carnival was a huge success today despite the rain and wind. The Year 12 parades, dances and war cries were some of the best John XXIII College has ever seen. Congratulations to all students who braved the weather to represent their houses proudly on the track in their field events.
The competition for the Father Kevin King Cup was very close throughout the day, however it was Campion House who were victorious in the end. This year our Spirit Award was taken out by Loreto House, however congratulations must go to all Houses, as the spirit displayed today was incredible.
All results for the track and field events will be up in the pavilion next week for students to view next week. If there are any issue with results, students are encouraged to email Miss Kononen at sara.kononen@cewa.edu.au. Age champions will also be acknowledged once the results have been confirmed at our Athletics Assembly.
The Interhouse Carnival results will be used to start the process of ACC Team selection. Students will have the opportunity to challenge for a position on the team by attending athletics training in the lead up to the ACC A Division Carnival.
Athletics Training
Athletics training is in full swing with incredibly strong numbers. Thank you to all the students showing a passion for athletics and making it down to our morning training sessions.
All students are welcome to attend the College morning training sessions to improve their athletics skills. Last year, John XXIII College achieved our team goal and stayed in the ACC A-Division Athletics Carnival. This year our aim is to do the same and hopefully some more! Training takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00-8:00am in the lead up to the ACC A-Division Athletics Carnival. Please find the full schedule below.
Year 10 AFL
Congratulations to Mr Joshua Bowen and his AFL team for taking out third position in their ACC Year 10 Boys AFL Carnival. The boys played extremely well against some tough competition. Next week, on Wednesday 4 August, our Year 10 girls will compete in their AFL Carnival at All Saints College.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Alumnus, Jessica Low (Class 2017) who has just been drafted to Fremantle Dockers AFLW.
