Selamat Siang!

A short week but a week filled with fun! We were so excited to continue to have families coming into our classrooms reading with students and helping with our PMP program. It is so lovely to see and we greatly appreciate the support you provide all of the students. Last week we were so lucky to have Caleb from FG and his mum Marissa bring in their two rabbits Bright and Ginger for Foundation to meet. The students were excited to learn all about the rabbits and give them a little pat. Thank you Caleb and Marissa!

In Writing students continued exploring nonfiction texts through their own writing. Students used their voice to choose what Australian animal they would like to learn about and watched videos about their chosen animal. During this time students were on the look out for particular information so that they could include this in their very own information report. Students used descriptive language to describe what their animal looked like, what their diet consisted of and where their animal’s habitat was. Additionally some students challenged themselves to add an extra interesting fact about their chosen animal. As we have be focusing on First Nations stories in Foundation, we decided to delve into the local First Nations language- Woi Wurrung. Students discovered the Woi Wurrung name for their chosen animal. Some of these include, Kuboroo (Koala), Inalinga (Echidna) and Yirrangin (Dingo).

In Reading, students revisited rhyming words. They explored word families that have the same ending sounds and challenged themselves to think of other words that belonged to these rhyming word families. Students also completed a rhyming word task on Seesaw for families to view shortly. Students delved into comprehension around text read, looking at the problem and solution in a story. They discovered that a problem was something that went wrong and was usually found in the middle of a story. A solution was how the characters fixed the problem and this was usually found at the end of a story. Students will continue to focus on this throughout the year, see if you can spot some problems and solutions in stories read at home.

Last week in Mathematics students were introduced to 3D shapes. Through rotations students explored the different dimensions of a 3D shape- sides, corners and faces. They noticed that 2D shapes only have 2 dimensions- sides and corners. This was our little trick to figure out if a shape is 2D or 3D. Students then explored shapes in real life, searching for the different 2D and 3D shapes they could find our classrooms and around the school.

At last weeks assembly we were very excited to see our first Foundation class host the Junior assembly. Well done FH, you all did a wonderful job sharing about Reconciliation week and all of the incredible things you have been learning about in First Nations Perspectives. This week FJ will be hosting our Junior assembly on Wednesday afternoon. Families are welcome to join us at 3:00pm in the hall.

We hope you all had a wonderful long weekend and we look forward to another fun week!
