Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning

Dr Janine Biggin

As we enter the second half of our academic year, I draw attention to the following important information regarding classes, the timetable and subject selection.

Semester 2 Classes

Given that the College has Step-Up, where we start our 2023 timetable during Term 4, we started our Semester 2 timetable last week. Teachers and students have already launched into Unit 2 and Unit 4 work in the senior years, as well as new subjects starting in Years 7 to 10.  We wish students well on their new studies.

Reports

Reports will be released during the first week of the school holidays.  These reports offer an opportunity to reflect over all the learning that has occurred in Semester 1.  This semester marks the first uninterrupted semester of schooling in two years, so all students are to be congratulated for the way they have engaged in their learning. Our reports will be released in SEQTA and parents will receive an SMS advising them when they are able to view the reports on SEQTA Engage.

Term 3 – Subject Selection and planning for 2023

While we seem to be only halfway through 2022, Term 3 is always a very busy time when we begin to plan for the next school year.  In early Term 3, our Subject selection process begins with the Futures Expo, held on Wednesday 20 July.   After this date, all students from Years 7 through to 11 will have Year 8-12 2023 subject selection assemblies.  At these assemblies we will focus on the process for subject selection and the decisions that students will make for what they will study in the following year.

Subject choices are particularly important for students as they enter Year 10 and Year 11.  Year 10 students may be presented with the opportunity to select an accelerated subject for 2023.  Teachers will be making recommendations about student performance on semester one subjects in Year 9, and these recommendations will guide offers of acceleration into Unit 1 and 2 subjects in Year 10.

For Year 11 2023 students, the possibility of studying certain mathematics and science units are based on their performance in Semester 1 units in Year 10 subjects. When entering the subject selection portal, students will be presented with the units for which they have been recommended. This process ensures students are enrolled in the most suitable learning programs in VCE.

Students will receive advice via their learning mentors during Term 3 to assist with the subject selection process.

Study Skills

Please see the attached article from the Study Skills Handbook about the role attitude plays in success.  All students in the College have access to the comprehensive resources in the Handbook.  See the access codes below

I take this opportunity to wish all students and their families a restful and safe mid-year holiday period.
