PREP

The Prep students have settled back into school very well after the Winter break. We have begun new units of work in Science and Play Based Learning and have started to explore these topics in class.

Our new Physical Science topic is all about movement and how the size and shape of an object can affect how it moves. We started the term off by learning about making a prediction, and made predictions about what was moving in the classroom and outside in the Agora. Then we checked our predictions by making observations and having discussions about how these things are moving.

Our new Play Based Learning topic covers Geography & Communication. Students will be discussing the local area and favourite places to eat, shop, and play/exercise. We will also explore different methods of communication and how these are used for certain purposes and in different situations. We have started the term by thinking about our favourite places to eat, who we will see there and why we might eat in these places.

On the 29th August the Preps will be celebrating 100 days of school and learning. Students are very excited about reaching 100 and have been adding a day onto class count-ups every morning.. We can't wait to share the fun activities that will happen on the big day!

Year 1

We’re back! Term 3 is here and what a wonderful start it has been.  Even though it has been incredibly cold and frosty, students have entered the classrooms with smiling faces and an abundance of positivity.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun things we have been learning in house 1!

In writing we have been learning about narratives. Students have learnt about the author and illustrator Leigh Hobbs and explored one of his narratives called Old Tom. We have explored characters, settings, problems and solutions. We will even write our own Old Tom narrative!

Thelma from 1C enjoyed learning how to draw Leigh Hobbs’ famous character called Old Tom.

Alicia from 1C created her own character called Miss Rainbow Power.

During play-based learning we have been investigating managed, constructed and natural environments.

You will see some students from 1A and 1D learning about these different environments through play.

In maths we have been learning about addition and subtraction. All students have been engaged in a variety of different learning activities and played a range of games.

Archie from 1C was able to write a number sentence to match the take away situation in the picture.

The Year 1 Teachers

Year 2

We have had a busy start to the term. It was great to visit the Museum and finally get to go on an excursion this year. We explored lots of different parts of the Museum with a focus being on the topic of geography which is our Humanities topic for Term 3

In Reading we have continued to learn new spelling patterns and practice those in the classroom. We aim to use our tricky words which are on display in our classrooms to extend our spelling and reading knowledge in reading and writing. We are busy learning how to use inferring to understand the clues that author’s use to make their texts interesting. This is to assist us to understand the books that we are reading.

In Writing we are working on Narratives by exploring all about how to describe characters and settings and to create an interesting problem and solution. We are also taking part in writing language experiences where we create something and then write about it. Watch out for craft work coming home and lots of talk about what we make in the classroom.

In Maths we are learning about Location and will move onto Chance and Data.

Don’t forget to go onto Seesaw and read the subject overviews which have been posted and give detailed information of the current work we are doing at school.

We thought you would like to read some of the poems that a selection of students wrote during the Poetry topic at the end of Term 2. The prompt they were given is below
