AROUND THE COLLEGE
Term 2
Congratulations to the Western Heights College WMR Cross Country Team who represented the College in an exemplary manner on Thursday 16th June at Brimbank Park SSV WMR Interschool Competition. It was encouraging to see an overall improvement in the College’s involvement at this level of competition after a two year absence due to Covid interruptions. Much thanks to the fine efforts of the school student representatives who chose to participate on the day, especially considering the at times, torrential rain and subsequent muddy conditions. A big thankyou also goes to fabulous support from parents and guardians who also attended on the day. A number of students will now represent the college in the State Final next term (Thurs 14th July - Yarra Glen). The results from the Western Heights College representatives from the day include the following:

JUNIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL
Congratulations to the Junior Girls AFL team who won the Bellarine/Barwon division and are now through to the Western Metropolitan finals on July 13th.
The girls began the day with a round robin competition at Winters Reserve. After Susie’s inspirational pep talk, the team played a dominant first game against Northern Bay College having multiple goal scorers and a very strong midfield. After a long and cold break, the team played Lara Secondary College. The aim of this game was to share to ball with everyone in the team and lock it in the forward 50. The game had lots of highlights with some great tackling, pressure on the ball and dominant ruck performances. Without a break the team played Oberon. Macca had set a new focus with everyone in the team learning to take on new roles. Our midfields and backs locked the game down creating a barrier across the 50-metre mark. This allowed our forwards to kick goals and the ball to be locked into our attacking end. After a quick break Western Heights played Surf Coast SC in the grand final. The team played a fantastic game, sharing the ball around and everyone playing their role.
Thanks to Susie and Macca for there amazing coaching, Rhianan Woods for the warm-ups and helpful tips throughout each game and for Ms. Dickson for coming along to support us.
Congratulations to all the boys who participated in last week’s GSSSA Netball competition and to the teams who will continue on into the Western Metro Finals in Altona in Term 3. The commitiment to quickly learn & adapt to a new sport, different positions and strategies was evident in the way that all players improved & grew in confidence throughout the day. The games were fast paced, skilful and exciting to watch (especially the nail biting one goal win in the Semi by the Junior boys). Every single participant listened and was respectful of opposition players, umpires and their team and proudly displayed the Western Heights College values of courage, community & integrity both on and off the court. I can’t wait to see what the next round will bring!
Ms Loe
On Tuesday the 7th the year 8’s, 9’s & 10s ventured down to the Geelong Sports Hub in South Geelong for the Boys Junior and Intermediate Inter school netball. There was one Intermediate team and two Junior teams. The intermediate team and one of the junior teams won all of their games and won their Grand Finals. As for the second junior team, they only managed to win one out of three games.
Cooper Harkins – Year 8
Congratulations & well done to the amazing group of girls from Year 7 who represented Western Heights College at Interschool Netball. Both teams fought hard all day, with many players playing netball for the first time, playing out of position or filling in at the other end of the court.
While the A Team narrowly lost their SF, the B team continued on to the GF and won by 3 goals in an extra 6 minutes of overtime. It was an exciting game with some excellent shooting, tight defence and strong midcourt play.
Thanks to the Senior Coaches Zainab & Nia and also to Tilly from Year 8 who was our superstar scorer.
A very special mention goes to Tatum Williams, Nasrin Muzafari and Eliza Connelly who filled in all day for the Belmont High School team who we're short of players. These girls epitomise the WHC values of community, courage and integrity as well as being great sports.
State School Spectacular students have been busy rehearsing each Friday lunchtime trying to perfect 6 intricate dances. They have attended two regional rehearsals hosted in our Quamby gymnasium where Manifold Heights, Herne Hill, Hamlyn Heights, Mandama, Belmont Primary and Northern Bay College attended. Our students have been lucky enough to learn from multiple choreographers in particular the amazing Hara Papoulias who has performed on Dancing with the Stars and Australia’s Got Talent and worked with Tones and I and Havana.
