Netball Coach

Having recently been appointed coach for the Opens Netball Team, I have been so impressed with our students' sportsmanship. Each week, the students have been impeccable in representing Canterbury Girls High School. Even when our opposition has been challenging, CGHS students have remained composed and continued to play with pride. It's even more wonderful when I hear our players thanking the opposition and their coach as we leave the court. It certainly makes me proud to be a part of the CGHS school community!

Pictured are our Open's 2nd grade team, who won their match against Georges River College - Penshurst Campus this round in a competitive game. The final score was 18 - 12.

World of Maths Incursion

On the 10th of June, 70 students in year 9 participated in the World of Maths incursion. There were 20 activities to choose from, many tested our ability and mathematical skills. Enjoyable activities included a marble run, fitting shapes into puzzles and applying skills to solve word and equation problems. There were various problem-solving activities in which year 9 solved and cooperated as teams to achieve and explore every-day uses of mathematics. The experience built teamwork and communication skills allowing students to test their knowledge and ability with friends and peers. We learnt the importance of mathematics in everyday life including telling time, shopping, managing money and measuring quantities. The incursion was an invaluable opportunity to connect with each other and work together to solve problems and enjoy maths

Year 9 Camp

In Week 6, Year 9 went to Mowbray Park Farm. Ms Humphreys, Ms La Grassa, Ms Kumar, Ms Naisbett, Ms Eade and Mr Barrington accompanied us on our trip. We were so excited to spend time with our friends and have a few days away from exams and assessments. When we arrived, the kind staff helped us settle in and it was off to activities.

The activities we participated in taught us about all things agriculture. Some of these activities included feeding animals, cracking whips, making damper, learning the 7 games of horsemanship, how drones are used in agriculture and also watching a sheep shearing demonstration (which was very impressive).

We learnt so much! Some facts that stuck out to us included:

  • There are vertical farms beneath Redfern and Barangaroo.
  • Australia is the largest wool importer in the world

The biggest drone that is allowed to be flown in Australia is at Mowbray Park Farm

Everything we did was so fun, however, some of the best memories were made when we had time to hang out with our friends. We built stronger and also new friendships which will last for a very long time. The epic party games with Mr Barrington around the fire one night were unforgettable.

The breakfasts were always good, and WEDGES, very sustaining. There were many snacks brought and the sugar sustained us throughout the arduous days. They allowed for deep conversations that were very meaningful.

Deliciously beautiful views, clear skies, and crisp fresh air filling our lungs was unforgettable.

The Majellan Lodge was stunning, the others were indescribable :) Although the alarms were set at 6:30 (or the teachers would knock on the doors), the exhaustion only set in once we got back home.

We are very appreciative to the teachers who both organized camp and came on it. Thank you for making the experience all the better :)

Year 7 Camp

During Week 7 this term, the majority of the Year 7 cohort attended a 3 day camp at Berry Sport and Recreation Centre, located two hours south of Sydney. The site was located on prime rural farmland, with lush green pasturelands and old farm buildings that added a pastoral charm to the place. Upon arrival, the students were involved in a variety of activities, including archery, bike skills, bush-walking, circus skills and rogaining. There were also many team building activities such as initiatives and mini-olympics, which were small challenges designed to establish close bonds with peers, whilst also having lots of fun. In addition to these jam-packed days, every night after dinner the students assembled in the ‘rec-hall’ to participate in countless games and activities run by the amazing instructors from the centre.

A big thankyou to all teachers who spent 3 very tiring but rewarding days ensuring the safety, involvement and wellbeing of all students; Shaun Mullin, Helen Wang, Kathie Burgess, Mandy Cheung, Rita Evangelista and Aveen Jwamer. We were so impressed by the outstanding behaviour and enthusiasm of the cohort, who definitely have made life-long memories entering the Canterbury Girls High School community. We hope that they can look back on the experience fondly.
