Music@CGHS
We are so excited to be able to contribute to this Newsletter so many items that involve performing for an audience. It has been a rocky road in the arts, and I can finally say that we are back on track and thriving once again.
This term we staged Winterfest that saw item after item of engaging and talented students showcasing their skills. All ensembles were on show including the Canterbury Combined Schools Band which is in its second year. Students from Canterbury Public School and Canterbury Boys have joined forces with Canterbury Girls to develop their skills and have some fun making music.
The Concert Band has been rehearsing various songs to perform at Winterfest where they have extended their skill and combined with the Canterbury Combined Schools Band to perform the classic rock song Seven Nation Army. We look forward into developing more skills and working together as a band.
The String Ensemble performed beautifully and has refined their sound thanks to the great work by Kasia & Danny, our new and very experienced tutors.
The Choir is having a big year. In term 1 we performed at the Ken Rosewall Arena as part of the PulseAlive Choir. This term we have been rehearsing for In Concert 2022, a celebration of voice to be held at The Opera House on Monday 29th August. The In Concert - Secondary Choral Festival sees the Combined Secondary Schools Choir annually joining forces with The Arts Unit's premier instrumental music ensembles to present 2 performances at the Sydney Town Hall. These concerts provide secondary students with the opportunity to sing in a massed choir with more than 500 other students and perform a range of significant choral works. This year the concert will be at the Opera House for one night only. School Spectacular is in Term 4 and we have auditioned for that as well, it’s a busy year!
Students in Elective Music have been busy composing songs and creating remixes with a focus on Australian Music. I have heard a lot of catchy tunes permeate throughout the corridors during class and lunch time. Students will have the opportunity to go into a recording studio in Term as a part of CG#Sounds. CG#Sounds is a program where students can go into a recording studio, record their song, and get it professionally mixed. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the recording process and receive a high-quality track of their composition.
A big thank you also to all our Private tutors who have produced great results in Semester 1. It makes such a big difference having experts to guide and develop the students in the endeavours to be better musicians and performers. That was also on show at Winterfest. Please take some time to check out the pictures in this Newsletter. I will also add the videos to our Youtube Playlist - CGHS CAPA Performances
which you can find on the school website.
It is never too late to join an ensemble or take up private vocal or instrumental lessons at CGHS so if you have an interest in music and would like to further your development speak to Ms Flannery or Ms Wilson in the CAPA department for more information.
Finally, we would like to thank Elise Overton who has been working with us in the role of classroom teacher in 2021 and with Choir and Band this year. She has taken a full time position in another school and will be sorely missed. Thank you for your kindness and support with students and teachers at CGHS.
Pictures - Winterfest 2022
Winterfest - A student perspective
Winterfest is a fantastic opportunity for all Cantabrians to rock the stage. This year we saw many talented performers take the stage and demonstrate their wide variety of music skills. It was great to see all the cool performers playing all kinds of music on stage and enjoying themselves.
We, The Birds, also got the chance to do our second Winterfest together as a sister duo. It felt so good to see people enjoy our performance and reaffirmed our passion for music. From our personal experience we recommend every student in the school who wants to share their talent in the community to get up there and do it! Trust us, everyone is so kind and welcoming and we have such supportive teachers who will back you all the way. Thank you, Ms Wilson and Ms Flannery, for all the hard work you put into these nights, and thanks to all the musos at Canterbury, we appreciate you!
Peace and Love, The Birds

Career Matters
Year 12 at the Western Sydney Careers Expo, June 23
On Thursday the 23rd of June the majority of year 12 attended the Western Sydney Expo at Homebush. It was a valuable opportunity made available to students so that they can explore and start planning their post school options.
The event is BIG, with representatives from all sectors of post school being represented. Universities, TAFE, Defence, industry and much more, were there to share information and answer questions.
The air was lively with student excitement and music as the tertiary providers offering music related courses allowed students to engage with what they offered. Even our very own Taniah had the chance to sing.
I hope that all the students had a good experience and came home buzzing with ideas and plans for their future. UAC
UAC - Year 12 students: early offers explained
If you’re in Year 12 and planning to go to uni next year, there are plenty of opportunities to lock in an early offer before you get your ATAR. In many cases, with just a little effort, you can finish school feeling a bit more relaxed about what’s in store for 2023.
But it's important to remember that most offers to Year 12 students are made in late December, after ATARs have been released. This is because the ATAR is one of the main tools universities use to select students for courses.
We highly recommend you make the most of all the opportunities universities give you to increase your chances of being selected for their courses.

UAC - Equity Scholarships (ES)

Institution Equity Scholarships: these are funded by individual institutions and their value, eligibility criteria and duration differ between institutions

Junior School Educator
Bachelor of Primary Education, University of Wollongong - Graduated in 2017
Cassandra Christensen had always loved teaching, even before she studied to become an educator in the classroom. ‘I taught dance, I was a swim instructor and I also volunteered and taught in Kids Ministry at church,’ she says.
Pursuing a career in education seemed like a natural choice, as did following her passion for the arts. Cassandra applied for early offers through the University of Wollongong’s early admission program with two possible courses in mind: Primary Education and Graphic Design.

Your free guide to a career in Optometry
Given that approximately 75% of vision loss is preventable or treatable, there is usually something that can be done to help your patients.
Given that work-related factors such as clinical challenges keep 78% of Australian optometrists happy and satisfied with their profession, you will most likely enjoy this profession if you like the challenge of putting together all the clues to reach a diagnosis and management plan in complex cases.
The scope of practice of optometrists is expanding. Students commencing an optometry degree in the future will be therapeutically endorsed when they graduate. This means that they will be better placed to assist some of their patients who present with eye inflammations, infections and injuries. It is expected that the number of people presenting to optometrists instead of emergency departments with eye injuries will increase.

Join Dr Nicole McDonald, Senior Research Officer, Central Queensland University as she discusses:
