Literacy Week

Celebrating Literacy

Literacy Week

29-08-22 – 02-09-22

This year, Lalor North Secondary College participated in a week-long celebration of all things iteracy.

We kicked off the week with a fancy-dress day where students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite character from a book, film, comic or television program. Students who dressed up were given the opportunity to strut their stuff on a catwalk at lunchtime, with the support and encouragement of their peers.

Congratulations to Ali H and Layla M who both took out the prize for ‘best dressed’, as voted by their classmates. Special mention to all other students – and staff - who made the effort to dress up. It was a delightful way to start the week!

The following day, students were invited to the library to create their own bookmarks. There was a fabulous turn out with several students providing positive feedback on the activity and having great pride in their creations.

On Wednesday, we hosted a movie viewing. Literacy also incorporates a speaking and listening component and films demonstrate this. Viewing films and television programs allow students the chance to not only use their listening skills, but activate their comprehension skills, too. It is, after all, a form of storytelling. An online survey was released to students on Compass a week before the film viewing to allow students the opportunity to vote for their movie of choice. There was an overwhelming response for the 2019 version of ‘Aladdin’. This was played over two days during lunchtimes for the students.

Thursday was an extra special day during our Literacy Week celebrations, as it also marked the very first Primary vs Secondary school trivia contest.

Students from Lalor East Primary School were invited to Lalor North Secondary College to verse our Year 7 students in a literacy quiz. We were very grateful for the opportunity to welcome the students of Lalor East Primary School to our school; all students collaborated and worked together well to ensure this event’s success. We are happy to announce that a Lalor North team won the trivia contest by just 2 points!

Congratulations to our Year 7 victors.

We finished off Literacy Week by inviting all students to the library to participate in literacy-based board games, including Scrabble, Articulate, Celebrity Heads and Yes/No. Once again, our students showed a keen interest in these games and spent their lunchtime playing happily. We have since had multiple requests for more of these games and activities to run on a regular basis.

Thank you to all staff – particularly the English Team and Rose, our librarian – and students for making Literacy Week such a success.

We look forward to an even bigger and better version for 2023.
